General Description
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is dedicated to delivering a safe, high-quality, and efficient transportation system across the State of Wyoming. We are currently seeking a highly motivated and qualified Engineer II to join our team in Cheyenne, Wyoming. This full-time position offers the opportunity to contribute to highway projects from inception through design, construction, and contract completion, under the guidance of the Resident Engineer.
Key Responsibilities- Perform engineering tasks related to highway projects throughout all phases, including design, construction, and contract management.
- Work closely with the Resident Engineer and other team members to ensure timely and successful project delivery.

Essential Functions- Issues, reviews, comments, and revises plan sets.
- Reviews and approves or rejects project submittals/permits.
- Reviews and updates forms and documentation procedures regarding construction activities and pay quantities.
- Inspects and assures projects/facilities are completed according to plans, specifications, design criteria, and budgetary constraints.
- Compiles and submits engineering recommendations and summaries for designing various projects/facilities with varying levels of complexity.
- Conducts extensive research of existing and evolving technologies.
- Provides technical guidance, advice, and oversight.
- Works in direct contact with contractors and subcontractors daily in the management of projects under construction.
- Deals with landowners, traveling public, local, county, state, and federal government entities in the same context.
- Performs field inspections, laboratory testing, materials analysis, and quality control.
- Develops engineering models, conducts studies, makes cost estimates, and submits reports, summaries, and other required documentation.
- Reviews and evaluates the work of assigned engineering technicians.
- Performs inspections and testing to ensure the contractor is constructing the project according to plans, specifications, etc.
- Provide the contractor provides the necessary information to construct a project (showing a project and interpreting plans).
- Calculates and documents quantities for payment to the contractor.
- Examines and verifies numeric data and specifications on source documents by recalculating computations using geometry or trigonometry.
- Resolves geometric and trigonometric problems encountered during the process of making detailed engineering drawings.
- Review construction plans and verify that these are in accordance with designated specifications and other requirements.
- Conduct field engineering surveys, including operating a level, operating a total station, GPS, and making decisions to solve problems.
- Checks and verifies the accuracy of detailed project drawings and makes corrections in drawings if necessary.
- Design preliminary work, calculating land areas, earth forms, circular curves, material quantities, and other qualitative measurements using geometric and trigonometric computations.
- Trains other personnel in engineering and surveying, and trains personnel on proper fieldwork documentation techniques.
- Coordinate with the contractor, other agencies, and the public when a project impacts them.
- Oversees moderate to major construction projects by documenting pay quantities, directing the work schedule of subordinates, and working with a contractor for quality control.
- Ensures materials sampling and testing are performed properly; audits material summaries for QA/QC purposes.
- Prepares water agreements, materials agreements, and other necessary agreements.

- Knowledge of authoritative reference materials in the field of engineering.
- Knowledge of surveying and surveying instruments and measurement and testing equipment, and systems.
- Knowledge of complex algorithms used in mathematical computer models to recognize the theory as the basis of their use.
- Knowledge of construction methods and processes, project scheduling, cost estimating procedures, and material quantity takeoffs.
- Knowledge of scientific and/or technical research practices.
- Knowledge of principles, theories, concepts, and practices of engineering.
