GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a dynamic Principal Engineer to lead the Traffic‑Electrical Design program in Cheyenne, WY. In this role you will supervise electrical design teams to develop and approve electrical design plans for contract bidding, supporting WYDOT’s mission for a safe and efficient state highway system.

RESPONSIBILITIES- Supervise electrical design teams for up to 25–30 projects simultaneously.
- Oversee research, design, and production of electrical plans.
- Ensure designs meet the National Electrical Code, State Fire Marshal requirements, and WYDOT standards.
- Provide electrical plans to the State Fire Marshal’s Office or local jurisdiction as required.
- Coordinate project development and documentation of design progression.
- Supervise the electrical design team, providing written and oral guidance to engineering technicians.
- Determine and work with other programs on locations for electrical system devices and related power sources.
- Produce complete, constructible, biddable packages of electrical plans for traffic signal, lighting, and ITS systems.
- Prepare project specifications and special provisions.
- Incorporate recommendations from other state programs, district field personnel, and non‑state agencies.
- Review and evaluate contractor submittals for all design projects.
- Provide technical recommendations based on system age, deficiencies, and cost analysis.
- Perform engineering analysis of electrical systems, including design variables and associated costs.
- Generate preliminary cost estimates for Traffic Program management, Project Development team, and district personnel.
- Write, review, and monitor progress of special provisions covering unique project requirements.
- Modify or update Traffic Program policy manuals, standard details, and standard plans to meet current standards.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.
- 2–4 years of progressive engineering experience at a Project Engineer level.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required at hire (Wyoming PE within six months).
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Proficiency in electrical and traffic engineering concepts, principles, and practices.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, analyze and resolve technical problems, and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.

This position will supervise the construction staff and projects located in Newcastle, Wyoming.
The successful candidate may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement.
