Knife River is looking for Seasonal Quality Control Technicians to join our team in Cheyenne, WY.
Role OverviewThis position is responsible for safely collecting samples of crushed stone, aggregate, sand, gravel, asphalt and concrete to test for conformance to specifications. Will need to display a professional and courteous attitude with customers and team members.
Duties & Responsibilities- Safely perform laboratory and field testing on aggregate, asphalt, and concrete materials while following all safety policies and maintaining a clean work environment.
- Collect and identify material samples; document and compile statistical test data.
- Conduct required material tests, including gradations, incinerations, rice tests, Marshall, Superpave, percent crushed, and related procedures.
- Lift material samples up to 50 lbs.
- Use basic computer applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) for documentation and reporting.
- Evaluate test data to determine material quality relative to project specifications.
- Apply problem solving skills to recommend corrective or alternative actions based on test results.
- Perform mathematical calculations and accurately interpret results.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and perform daily housekeeping tasks.
- Conduct both inprocess and finished inspections.
- Communicate effectively (verbal, written, listening) with team members, supervisors, and customers, even during high stress situations; maintain professionalism and positive customer relations.
- Perform standardized tests according to ASTM, AASHTO, and state DOT procedures.
- Maintain a valid driver's license in accordance with company policy.
- Carry out additional duties as assigned.
- Preferably 2+ years of experience in aggregate or concrete materials testing (training available for qualified candidates).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license per state and federal regulations.
- Strong attention to detail and aptitude with mathematical calculations.
- Self motivated with strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Ability to accurately document, log, and report test results in a timely and organized manner.
- Availability to work flexible shifts, including overtime, some Saturdays, and up to 7 days per week as required; must be able to travel for short periods.
- Ability to obtain or maintain relevant certifications (e.g., WYDOT, ACI, AASHTO, NRMCA).
- Ability to pass written and practical exams for WMTC Aggregate and Asphalt certifications, and ACI Concrete Testing certification.
- Proficiency in basic mathematics, including unit conversions, percentages, and material property calculations.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks in a fastpaced environment.
- Ability to work in all types of weather conditions.
