** Position Summary
** An Archaeological Field Director temporary hourly position is being advertised with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). CEMML is seeking detail-oriented and highly motivated Field Director to join a collaborative team that supports a large-scale Air Force survey, infrastructure development, and deployment program. This position offers the opportunity to work within a dynamic team environment while delivering impactful solutions for a nationally critical infrastructure program.
The Field Director will ensure archaeological surveys and ground-disturbing activities are completed adequately and effectively in accordance with the project Programmatic Agreement, contracts terms and conditions, and derivative work plans. technical expertise and compliance monitoring of fieldwork on behalf of the Air Force’s Sentinel System Program Office detachment at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, WY. The Field Director also assists with coordination of Tribal Cultural Specialists who support field operations for all phases of archaeological investigations.
Extensive previous experience leading and conducting NRHP eligibility assessments, and small as well as large-scale data-recovery mitigation work is required. As a member of the CEMML Cultural Resources program, adherence to the executed project Programmatic Agreement is critical. In addition, an excellent understanding of the technical requirements and theoretical foundations that guide the discipline is expected.
The candidate should be prepared to support field work surveys by providing on-site technical support and troubleshooting, compliance monitoring and oversight, and coordination on behalf of the Air Force. The Field Director must also have experience integrating Tribal Cultural Specialists into archaeological investigations. This position will routinely interface with CEMML Cultural Resources Specialists, GIS Specialists, Air Force personnel, Tribal representatives, and other cooperators and contractors.
The Field Director will be expected to:
* Conduct compliance inspections of archaeological fieldwork to ensure compliance with the project Programmatic Agreement and other regulatory documents.
* Actively participate in field work throughout remote and rugged areas.
* Assist with training content development and provide on-site training and technical support.
* Manage and maintain CEMML's inventory of field equipment
* Coordinate weekly distribution of field tablets
* Participate in daily safety and cultural awareness briefings
* Adhere to CEMML and Air Force safety protocols and standards
* Provide GIS technical support and troubleshooting assistance to Tribal Cultural Specialists
* eview technical reports, work plans, and management summaries for compliance with project PA and other regulatory guidance.
* Assist and support ArcGIS Online feature services and mobile tools (Field Maps, Smart Forms, Survey
123) for complex field data collection workflows.
* Follow file naming conventions and data management protocols to support team efficiency and regulatory compliance.
* Assist with post-processing field data to ensure data integrity.
* Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
* Troubleshoot GIS tool performance issues in the field to maintain system reliability.
** Duty-station for this position is F.E. Warren Air Force Base**. The Field Director is expected to provide in-person on-site support between March and October when field crews are deployed. The Field Director is required to accompany field crews during 2-week field rotations occurring between March and November. Travel may be required to any of the project locations across the western United States.
