Job DescriptionUnder the direction of the Lead Technical Laboratory Specialist or the Technical Laboratory Manager, the Technical Laboratory Specialist is responsible for conducting experiments, performing tests, and providing results, analysis and reporting. The Technical Laboratory Specialist is also responsible for maintaining the laboratory, equipment, and inventory as well as safely handling, storing, and disposing of samples, chemicals, and other materials. This position is considered a safety‑sensitive position.
The Technical Laboratory Specialist role encompasses three levels of seniority based on skillset and experience with Magnum’s various service lines.
Technical Laboratory Specialist 1Entry‑level position into the role. Responsibilities include participating in an on‑call rotation, working a rotational schedule, and supporting the satellite laboratories.
Technical Laboratory Specialist 2Intermediate position awarded to specialists with proven level 1 tasks, independently completing Soil Stabilization service line testing and reporting, and completing all tests in the Laboratory SPOs and interpreting results. Mentors Specialist 1. Requires on‑call rotation, rotational schedule, and support of satellite laboratories.
Technical Laboratory Specialist 3Senior position performed by specialists with proven level 1 and 2 tasks in Oilfield Cementing, Fluid Services, and Soil Stabilization service lines. Acts as mentor to Specialists 1 and 2. Requires on‑call rotation.
Job Responsibilities Entry‑Level Laboratory Tasks- Learn, understand, and apply basics of cement blends and additives, including calculations.
- Log all field samples and experimental products.
- Complete reports and enter test data, as required.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and inventory.
- Conduct safe handling, storage, and disposal of samples, chemicals, and other materials.
- Assist with soil stabilization testing for Infrastructure service line.
- Conduct quality control testing for lab and field cement samples, including weighing cement, additives, and water.
- Coordinate internal testing of samples (cement blend formulations) upon request.
- Conduct and complete all lab tests per departmental SOPs; summarize, interpret reports.
- Independently conduct soil stabilization testing; maintain reporting and issuing recommendations.
- Obtain and apply greater understanding of laboratory maintenance, cement blend calculations, product interactions, blends, and operations.
- Maintain, operate, calibrate, and install all lab equipment.
- Troubleshoot products and blends.
- Maintain testing database, ensuring accuracy.
- Assist with maintaining departmental marketing materials (product pages, blend pages, handbooks).
- Assist with departmental research and development projects; maintain and update project summaries.
- Perform and act as a backfill on entry‑level tasks.
- Manage and prioritize lab testing for the department, delegating to the team.
- Schedule equipment maintenance and track parts and associated cost.
- Ensure all departmental data is captured, maintained, and updated regularly.
- Maintain marketing materials and participate in presentations with Sales department.
- Review lab reports for accuracy and completeness.
- Conduct training presentations for post‑secondary institutions.
- Manage departmental research and development projects; maintain project summaries.
- Maintain thorough understanding of products, interactions, blends, and operations.
- Develop test parameters to evaluate product lines and opportunities for improvement.
- Assist with soil stabilization testing and quality control testing as needed.
- Carry out quality control checks for the department.
- Perform and act as a backfill on entry and intermediate tasks.
- Follow all JSA and Safe Work Procedures.
- Complete and participate in all required safety training.
- Understand and apply QHSE policies and expectations.
- Work with management to improve SOPs and policies.
- Participate in training and development activities.
- Other related duties as required.
