Drilling Supervisor – Wyoming Department of Transportation – Cheyenne, WY
Join the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) as a Drilling Supervisor to lead the geotechnical drilling operations within our Geology Program. In this role, you will oversee all aspects of drilling operations, ensuring safety, quality, and efficiency across Wyoming’s transportation system.
Responsibilities- Trains and manages drilling personnel in the safe operation of various drilling methods (auger/wireline/air-mud rotary), coring, testing, and sampling equipment assigned to the Geology Program.
- Trains drillers in safe operations of transportation of rigs, water trucks, and backhoe to project sites.
- Develops efficient means and methods to advance drill holes, collects samples at required testing frequency/intervals, and installs monitoring well casing.
- Schedules and prioritizes routine and required maintenance of all service equipment; supports trucks, drill rigs/backhoe, water trucks, transports, and trailers.
- Works in all types of weather, heavy lifting, on Interstate highways, narrow roads under live traffic, and varying terrain with remote/difficult access.
- Communicates effectively between drill crews, geologists, and geological supervisors to coordinate equipment status and supply adequate staffing of drill rigs from project to project.
- Orders replacement parts and new equipment for drill rigs to replace worn out parts.
- Tracks billing and documentation of all supply purchases.
- Safely operates all equipment during manpower shortages, around underground and overhead utilities, and noisy environments.
- Participates in interviewing candidates for new hires and documents hours required to obtain CDL.
- Contributes to daily tailgate safety talks with crew.
- Provides input to the Program on incidents and takes required action to improve safe operations of equipment and personnel working around them.
- Develops specifications for new drill rigs, trucks, trailers, and support vehicles.
- Conducts yearly inventory of supplies and keeps safety equipment stocked.
Preferred – Commercial Driver’s License holder.
Knowledge
- Geological testing and testing equipment.
- Reading gauges and interpreting electronic readings for monitoring while drilling.
- Spreadsheets and databases.
- Maintenance procedures for heavy equipment repairs.
- Safety procedures for drilling / basic geologic knowledge.
- Ability to lift 100 pounds.
- Ability to obtain and retain a Commercial Driver's License.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree (typically in Construction Management) or high school diploma plus 3–5 years of progressive drilling experience.
- 0–2 years of progressive work experience (typically in drilling) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Driller, or equivalent education and experience substitution as noted above.
- Working during inclement weather and uneven terrain.
- Hazardous conditions including wet and muddy ground, deep snow, and working near live traffic, running rivers, ice, and wildlife.
- Frequent travel required.
