Correctional Sergeant Position

The Wyoming Department of Corrections is seeking a dedicated and dependable professional to join our team. A Correctional Sergeant to assist the Cheyenne Central Office Unicover Building security by providing intelligence, building security, and complex screening procedures for incoming/outgoing mail, packages, and visitors. This position conducts staff background checks as necessary to ensure compliance with hiring standards and PREA standards. Provide support to the Investigative Services Unit (ISU) by assisting with intelligence and investigative work.

Conducts NCIC background checks and processes applications for WDOC Central Office access badges. Participate or Chair the Safety Committee, manage building safety equipment (Narcan, AEDs, and emergency checklists). Coordinate safety inspections and corrective actions.

Essential functions include:

  • Act as first responder for the Unicover building, and provide indirect supervision of staff, visitors, and deliveries when necessary
  • Responds to, controls, and commands minor and major incidents.
  • This position is the initial Commander in an emergency until properly relieved in accordance with ICSC protocols.
  • Responsible for making notifications to facility management, outside agencies, and facility/department OIC as necessary.
  • Acting as the initial responders for unruly guests or phone-based threats.
  • This position must be weapon-certified because it is an armed post.
  • Overall, building security and control.
  • Ensures policies and procedures are enforced and followed
  • Coordinates Emergency Preparedness Drills and ensures that the staff is prepared for emergency situations at an operational level
  • Conducts simulations and exercises to assist staff and prepares them for emergency situations in the correctional environment.
  • Conducts security walk-throughs to ensure daily safety and security of the building.
  • Conduct staff background checks as necessary to ensure compliance with hiring standards and PREA standards.
  • Investigative Service Unit supports by monitoring inmate phone calls, tracking security threat groups, reviewing correspondence, conducting link analysis, and other related intelligence.
  • Conducts NCIC background checks on Correctional Officer candidates, volunteers, visitors, and contractors. Processes applications for WDOC Central Office access badges
  • Participates in or Chair the Unicover Safety Committee
  • Provide Krav Maga and other In-Service training

Preference may be given to applicants approved through POST to be an instructor for various WDOC training. Must be weapons certified and maintain the certification throughout post. Knowledge of policies and procedures established for the work system. Knowledge of work management and work leadership. Knowledge of the philosophy of custody/security within a prison setting. Knowledge of techniques and precautions necessary to maintain a safe and secure facility.

Knowledge of the use of security devices and the Inmates Rules Handbook. Knowledge of supervision. Knowledge of motivation and initiative in completing assigned duties.

Education:

Bachelor's Degree (typically in Criminal Justice).

Experience:

0-2 years of progressive work experience in Correctional Security with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional Corporal. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Correctional Officer Certification awarded by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission. Applicants not holding Wyoming POST certification must be awarded certification within 6 months of employment. OR Education & Experience Substitution: 3-5 years of progressive work experience in Correctional Security with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional Corporal. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Correctional Officer Certification awarded by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission. Applicants not holding Wyoming POST certification must be awarded certification within 6 months of employment.

Physical working conditions include candidates must successfully pass a background check prior to the appointment. Candidates must have the ability to work overtime as required, and the ability to holidays and weekends.
