Job Summary

The Fusion Splicing Technician is responsible for the installation, termination, and certification of high-density fiber optic cable systems in telecom and data center environments. This role requires a minimum of three years of hands‑on experience performing single‑fiber and mass ribbon fusion splicing on trunk cables up to 3,456 fiber strands, proficiency with Fujikura fusion splicers and fiber test equipment, and the ability to supervise and mentor a team of fiber optic technicians.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Installation and Termination
  • Perform pitch conversion and ribbonization of loose‑tube fiber cable using UV‑cure matrix tooling, ribbon stripping tools, and V‑groove array blocks at specified center‑to‑center spacing tolerances.
  • Execute single‑fiber and mass ribbon fusion splicing on high‑density trunk cables up to 3,456 fiber strands using Fujikura 90R, 90RS, and 90RS Plus fusion splicers, including splice tray organization and pigtail termination within splice enclosures.
  • Terminate fiber assemblies to patch panels with proper routing and bend radius management, verifying endface quality via inspection microscopy prior to connector mating.
Testing and Documentation
  • Test and certify completed fiber links using OTDRs, power meters, and light sources, verifying splice loss values and total link insertion loss against project specifications.
  • Diagnose and resolve fiber faults including high‑loss splices and cable breaks, utilizing OTDR trace analysis to pinpoint fault locations.
  • Maintain complete project documentation including splice loss records, OTDR traces, as‑built cable records, and corrective action logs.
Supervision and Training
  • Supervise and coordinate a team of fiber optic technicians across active projects, managing workflow and ensuring work is completed on schedule and to specification.
  • Provide hands‑on training and mentorship to technicians on fiber preparation, ribbonization, fusion splicing, end face inspection, and test equipment operation.
  • Enforce industry safety standards and best practices, monitor team performance, and deliver ongoing feedback to improve technical skills and workmanship quality.
  • At least 3 years experience in fiber optic cable installation, termination, splicing and testing.
  • Experience performing single fiber and/or ribbon fiber fusion splicing, including fiber stripping, cleaving, and endface inspection, with working knowledge of splice enclosure organization and patch panel termination in telecom or data center environments.
  • Hands‑on experience operating Fujikura 90R, 90RS, and/or 90RS Plus fusion splicers with demonstrated proficiency in single fiber and ribbon fiber splicing techniques.
  • Proficiency in using fiber optic testing equipment, such as OTDRs, power meters and light sources.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and safety protocols.
  • Ability to supervise, manage, and train other team members.
Preferred Experience
  • Demonstrated experience splicing high‑density fiber optic trunk cables with fiber counts well beyond basic low‑count installations, up to and including 3,456 fiber strand cables.
  • Industry certification from FOA, ETA International, or BICSI in fiber optic installation and/or splicing (CFOT, CFOS/S, FOT, or Installer 2 Optical Fiber).
  • Fujikura factory training certification or equivalent manufacturer‑level splicer training, with verified field experience on high‑density fiber trunk cable installations.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to work on ladders and use power tools; ability to lift/carry/setup a 50‑pound box or ladder.
  • Must own low‑voltage tools, snips, cable strippers, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc.
  • Ability to work 2nd or 3rd shift and overtime as needed; ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
