Heavy Equipment Mechanic
General Description
This position is responsible for support and maintenance of 80 agency fleet vehicles and equipment as well as 300 pieces of Federal Excess Personal Property (FEPP) and Firefighter Property (FFP). Travel as needed to remote locations. Provide direct supervision for one lead mechanic who oversees four mechanics. Supervise the overall operation of the mechanic shop, act as a vocational trainer and mentor, address personnel issues, complete annual employee evaluations, update JCQs, and create and follow up on IDPs.
Must maintain a Class A CDL license and submit to random alcohol and drug testing.

- Direct operations of the mechanic in the maintenance and repair of light and heavy equipment, including new equipment fabrication.
- Schedule repair and annual preventive maintenance inspections for Wyoming State Forestry Division equipment.
- Supervise the total operation of the mechanic shop: plan, assign, supervise, inspect, and review work of mechanics and other workers maintaining diesel, heavy equipment, and light duty vehicles.
- Evaluate damage and assign workers to make repairs; maintain inventory records, employee time records, order supplies, parts, and equipment; train mechanics and other workers in maintenance, inspection, repair, and diagnosis.
- Fiscally responsible for purchasing repair parts, shop supplies, tools, and equipment; process associated payments; maintain inventory and records of purchases and employee activities.
- Basic computer skills, including email, Word, and Excel.
- High level of mechanical ability and troubleshooting of various mechanical issues.
- Ability to gas and arc weld (TIG and MIG) using cutting torches, plasma cutters, and design parts.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools.
- Knowledge of repair methods and techniques for diesel, heavy equipment, and light duty vehicles.
Education:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Management).
Experience:
0‑3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics) with knowledge at the level of a Heavy Mechanic Supervisor I.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Ability to obtain a CDL.
Education & Experience Substitution: 4‑6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics) with knowledge at the level of a Heavy Mechanic Supervisor I.

- Work may be required in all weather conditions, outdoor, cold, hot, windy, or roadside environments.
- Work may involve hazardous materials requiring protective equipment.
- Work may involve mechanical, chemical, electrical, fire, and explosive hazards.
- Must be physically capable of hard manual labor, heavy lifting, and using a respirator.
- Will be on call 24/7, with a maximum response time of 45 minutes at the shop.
