The HVAC Journeyman & Master Service Technician is a licensed heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning professional responsible for installing, servicing, repairing, and optimizing residential and commercial HVAC systems. This role ranges from advanced journeyman-level fieldwork to master-level diagnostics, leadership, and quality control. Technicians ensure all work meets mechanical code, safety standards, and manufacturer specifications while providing clear communication to customers, contractors, and internal teams.
PrimaryResponsibilities
System Installation — Install furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, boilers, mini-splits, and ventilation systems.
Service & Repair — Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, refrigerant, and airflow issues.
Refrigerant Handling — Recover, charge, and manage refrigerants in compliance with EPA 608 requirements.
Ductwork & Airflow — Inspect, modify, seal, and balance duct systems to ensure proper airflow and efficiency.
Advanced Diagnostics — Perform complex troubleshooting on heating, cooling, refrigeration, and control systems.
Controls & Automation — Work with control boards, sensors, thermostats, VFDs, and building automation systems.
System Commissioning — Verify system performance, refrigerant charge, combustion efficiency, and airflow metrics.
Quality Assurance — Ensure installations and repairs meet code, safety, and workmanship standards.
Customer Communication — Explain findings, recommend solutions, and maintain clear service documentation.
Team Leadership — Mentor apprentices, support journeymen, and provide technical guidance on complex jobs.
Skills & QualificationsJourneyman or Master HVAC License (depending on role level)
EPA 608 Certification (Universal preferred)
Strong mechanical, electrical, and diagnostic skills
Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams
Experience with residential and commercial HVAC systems
Professional communication and customer-service skills
Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work in attics, crawlspaces, rooftops, and all weather conditions
Role Expectations by LevelJourneyman Level — Performs advanced fieldwork, handles standard diagnostics, assists with installations, and mentors apprentices.
Master Level — Leads complex diagnostics, oversees quality control, manages high-level repairs, and provides technical leadership across teams.
