Position: Highway Maintenance Technician & Snowplow Operator 2026-01599

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Highway Maintenance Technician in Cheyenne, Wyoming to ensure safe and efficient transportation for the community.

Essential Functions
  • Maintain and operate complex equipment safely and proficiently.
  • Assist in training other technicians on equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Under limited supervision, flag traffic and set up traffic control devices.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as single and tandem axle trucks, augers, aerial lifts, and snow/ice removal systems.
  • Rehabilitate roadway surfaces and traffic control devices, including signs and pavement markings.
  • Maintain highway-related facilities such as rest areas, performing water and wastewater treatment per EPA and DEQ requirements.
  • Complete all required state and federal training for certifications, inspections, and skill development.
  • Communicate status updates and process effectiveness to team members.
  • Utilize agency computers for training, performance evaluations, and stay current with technology.
  • Remove snow and ice from roadways, assessing treatment effectiveness and adjusting as needed.
  • Adhere to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including proper use of personal protective equipment.
Preferences / Agency Requirements
  • Preference for applicants with a current Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
  • Must be able to obtain certifications to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT.
  • Must be able to obtain a Certificate of course completion of Defensive Driving.
  • Must be able to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Must be able to obtain a Flagger certification.
Knowledge
  • State highway pavement marking and signing standards.
  • State and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures.
  • Equipment maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Hazardous materials response procedures.
  • Proper use of personal protective equipment as per federal and state requirements.
  • Basic operation of single and tandem-axle trucks, loaders, and tractors.
  • Safe work procedures, First Aid and CPR, OSHA safety data sheets for chemicals.
  • Basic office equipment usage (computers, calculators, telephones).
Minimum Qualifications
  • 2-4 years of relevant highway maintenance/construction experience, or
    • Associate’s Degree (typically in Engineering) with 0-1 year of related experience.
  • Must be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within twelve months of hire.
Physical Working Conditions
  • Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools.
  • Daily use of motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Ability to lift or carry 50 pounds independently.
  • Ability to stand, sit, and operate equipment for long periods.
  • Work in adverse environmental conditions (rain, snow, heat, hail).
  • Ability to walk long periods on even and uneven ground.
  • Working around high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
Notes
  • FLSA:
    Non‑Exempt.
  • WYDOT conducts motor vehicle record checks to verify a valid driver’s license.
  • Must pass a pre‑employment drug screening and/or physical; subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Must be available for emergency work calls any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must report to the department shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required.
  • May be required to obtain water certifications if necessary.
  • Must complete training on equipment operation, Defensive Driving, First Aid/CPR, and Flagger certification.
