Laramie County School District 1 – Transportation – Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Job Description

TSS/260 day contract. Monday-Friday. 8 hours daily. Pay Column L: $19.62 hourly plus benefits. Must reside in Laramie County. Hours will be determined prior to hire date, may start as early as 4:30 a.m. M‑F. Prior experience in student transportation and/or fleet dispatching is preferred.

Purpose Statement

The Dispatcher provides support within the student transportation services area by processing service requests for routine and emergency maintenance, maintaining department records, operating the radio system, driving a bus as needed, and coordinating assigned projects.

Essential Functions
  • Assists Coordinator – Activity and Coordinator – Route with scheduling drivers for trips and assisting drivers with routing issues.
  • Compiles a variety of data (incident reports, inspections, student counts, mileage, time cards, logs, receipts, employee files, etc.) to develop formal reports, convey information, and comply with mandated requirements.
  • Informs school personnel, students, parents, maintenance, and law enforcement of rules, regulations, routes, changes, maintenance issues, violations, accidents, etc., to enable follow‑up action.
  • Maintains service‑related files and records (mileage logs, servicing schedules, worksheets, DMV requirements, etc.) to prioritize routine maintenance, minimize vehicle damage, and avoid service disruptions.
  • Operates the radio system to convey and receive information to/from drivers.
  • Participates in unit meetings, in‑service training, workshops, IEPs, etc. as required to convey and gather information necessary for job functions.
  • Performs functions of a school bus driver as needed to meet district transportation service needs.
  • Processes materials (service orders, route changes, travel arrangements, recordings, workers’ comp, receipts, etc.) to update and distribute information, authorize action, and comply with mandated requirements.
  • Provides bus‑driver functions when required to ensure buses are able to transport students.
  • Responds to inquiries from students, parents, and staff (stop locations, schedules, state‑regulated policies, etc.) to provide necessary information about transportation services.
  • Responds to injuries and/or accidents to comply with established policies and regulatory guidelines.
  • Schedules work assignments (route or changes, driver or substitute, assistant or substitute, bus, special needs, transitional, etc.) to ensure completion of transportation routes in a timely manner.
Other Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the Transportation Department.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS required include operating two‑way radio and county emergency radio; using standard office equipment and software applications; performing clerical procedures; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE required to perform basic math (fractions, percents, ratios), read technical information, compose documents, facilitate group discussions, and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge competencies include department policies and procedures, office practices, and grammar and punctuation concepts.

ABILITY required to schedule activities, meetings, and events; gather and collate data; use job‑related equipment; work independently with others; handle diverse individuals and groups; interpret guidelines and problem‑solve with equipment. Specific competencies include adapting to changing work priorities, meeting deadlines, setting priorities, working with detailed data, and managing frequent interruptions.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include working under limited supervision following standardized practices, leading and coordinating others, operating within a defined budget, and utilizing resources from other work units. Opportunities exist to impact the organization’s services.

Work Environment

Physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing; fine finger dexterity. Typical job composition: 60% sitting, 15% walking, 25% standing. Work environment generally hazard‑free and clean.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Required Testing: None specified.

  • Certificates and Licenses: CPR/First Aid Certificate;
    Valid Driver’s License and evidence of insurability; CDL with P and S endorsements;
    Defensive Driving Certificate.
  • Maintains Certificates and or Licenses.
  • Clearances:
    Criminal Background Clearance.
  • FLSA Status:
    Non‑Exempt.
