Job Description: Special Education Teacher – Self-Contained Classroom

Summary

Join a supportive primary school special education program serving a small, self-contained classroom of students with autism and developmental delays. This full-school-year contract role works with approximately 8–12 students, including some non-verbal learners, and provides individualized instruction, behavioral support, and daily living assistance in a structured classroom environment.

The teacher will lead instruction and IEP implementation while working closely with paraprofessionals and other school staff. This position requires a teacher who is comfortable supporting students through behavioral outbursts, using de-escalation strategies, and assisting with toileting when needed.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Lead a self-contained classroom of approximately 8–12 primary-level students.
  • Provide individualized and small-group special education instruction.
  • Support students with autism, developmental delays, and communication needs.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor IEP goals and accommodations.
  • Adapt curriculum and instruction to individual learning needs.
  • Track student progress and use data to adjust instruction.
  • Manage behavioral outbursts and provide appropriate de-escalation support.
  • Assist students with toileting and other required daily living needs.
  • Collaborate with paraprofessionals, teachers, and related school staff.
  • Communicate with families regarding student progress and concerns.
  • Maintain required special education documentation and student records.
What You'll Need
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with required Special Education/LBS endorsement.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities; self-contained classroom experience preferred.
  • Experience supporting students with autism and/or developmental delays preferred.
  • Ability to safely manage behavioral outbursts and use de-escalation strategies.
  • Willingness and ability to provide toileting assistance.
  • Working knowledge of IEPs and special education requirements.
Schedule

Contract: ASAP – May 27, 2027

Regular

Schedule:

7:25 AM – 2:50 PM, including a 30-minute lunch

Tuesdays: Staff meeting extends the workday to approximately 3:35 PM
