Join Affiliated Oncologists as an RN! AO specializes in treating a variety of cancers including lymphoma, lung, breast, prostate, gynecologic, colorectal, and head and neck cancers. Our physicians and staff are a multi‑disciplinary team of highly experienced caregivers focused on helping patients and their families receive the best care and support possible.
SCOPE:
Under general supervision, provides professional nursing care for patients adhering to national and company standards and guidelines for specialty regulations. Demonstrates knowledge of physiological, psychological, and developmental and age‑specific differences in the patient population—including late adolescence, adulthood, middle age, and the elderly. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to provide assessment and therapeutic management of patient/family needs. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.
- Plan, implement, coordinate, evaluate, and promote the continuity of care consistent with established standards and practices.
- Assess health status by interviewing patient regarding current status and medical history.
- Collect and record nursing assessment and interventions.
- Review and report the results of the health status assessment, physical examination, laboratory data, radiographic data, and psychosocial assessment of assigned patients to the provider.
- Assess patient/family needs and provide teaching and other instructional material.
- Provide psychosocial support to patients and families.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
- Prepare and administer therapies under the direction and supervision of a physician.
- Administer all medications and blood products using correct medication/blood product, dosage/amount, route, time, and technique.
- Ensure pre‑authorization and appropriate consent forms are obtained prior to administration of therapies where applicable.
- Facilitate dose modification by assessing patient, labs, consulting protocol or treatment plan, calculating dose, and consulting physician regarding dosage modifications, problems, and symptom management.
- Perform venipuncture, access implanted ports, and maintain central line catheter devices.
- Maintain accurate documentation of assigned patient care and treatments provided.
- Apply knowledge of reimbursement procedures and charge capture.
- Maintain work environment and restock the supply area as needed.
- Follow OSHA guidelines when handling cytotoxic agents, biohazardous waste, and any other material potentially infected with a blood‑borne pathogen.
- Maintain all disinfection protocols.
- Maintain equipment according to quality control standards.
- Facilitate clinical operations and patient care; manage patient medication refill requests from the pharmacy telephone line and record the information in the patient chart.
- Assist physician with exams and procedures.
- Maintain efficient and appropriate patient flow in and out of exam rooms.
- Facilitate and schedule consultations, pre‑testing, diagnostic tests or procedures, referrals, and future appointments for patients.
- Triage patient phone calls as needed and document relevant information in the patient chart.
- Facilitate communication between patient/family and interdisciplinary team and coordinate services related to patient care.
- Assist patients in locating available community resources.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Assist and collaborate with clinical research.
- Act as a resource to LPN/LVNs and medical assistants.
- Provide nursing coverage for satellite offices as needed.
- Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge of oncology nursing by engaging in ongoing educational opportunities.
- Graduate from an accredited program for professional nursing education, BSN preferred.
- Hold RN State license and current registration with the State Board of Nursing in the practicing state.
- Maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Meet continuing education requirements.
- Business experience: 0‑3 years nursing experience, preferably at least one year in oncology.
