Interim Controller

Location: Downtown Chicago | 3 days on-site, Wednesday required

Pay Range: $60–$75/hour

Start: ASAP

Our client, a well-established nonprofit organization
, is seeking an Interim Controller to provide hands‑on leadership and stability within the Finance Department during a period of transition. This role will oversee core accounting operations, ensure accurate financial reporting, and serve as a key partner to senior leadership.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned nonprofit finance professional who can quickly step in, take ownership of day‑to‑day accounting activities, support audit readiness, and guide a developing accounting team through process improvements and system adoption.

What’s the Job?
  • Lead and oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management, ensuring compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards

  • Own and execute the month‑end close process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and timely preparation of monthly financial statements

  • Prepare, review, and analyze financial reports, budget‑to‑actual variances, and key metrics for senior leadership

  • Partner with leadership on audit coordination, grant and contract financial reporting, and internal control compliance

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, providing oversight, guidance, and hands‑on support while driving process improvements and system optimization (Sage Intacct)

  • What’s Needed?
  • Extensive nonprofit accounting experience, including fund accounting, restricted assets, grants, contributions, and Form 990 support

  • Strong technical accounting background with the ability to review work, identify issues, and ensure accurate financial reporting

  • Proven leadership experience managing and supporting accounting teams during periods of transition or change

  • Experience with
    Sage Intacct or a comparable accounting system, including chart of accounts and reporting structures

  • Ability to operate independently, prioritize effectively, and bring a calm, solutions‑oriented approach in a dynamic environment
