As a Theatre Design Consultant, you will join our global Theatre Consulting team and be responsible for building planning and auditorium design, creating functional and inspiring spaces where the performing arts and other events can thrive.
Interviews will be conducted either remotely via Microsoft Teams or in person at our New York Studio, starting in January 2026. Further details will be provided to shortlisted candidates.
Key Responsibilities- Develop initial auditorium concept and design establishing the form, function, and identity, including audience and performer egress. Create seating layouts, design, and detailed sightline studies.
- Serve as a design synthesis point for the internal team, collaborating with technical systems designers, acousticians, and project architects.
- Coordinate and collaborate with project architects, reviewing and commenting on architectural and engineering drawings, reviewing construction progress on-site, and performing measurements and punch listing for commissioning of seating systems.
- Create and present design presentations, written reports, 2D and 3D drawings, sketches, and specifications.
- Ensure project demands are met and delivered to a high standard of quality.
- Manage multiple project teams simultaneously while meeting deadlines and balancing deliverables.
- Travel for meetings and construction site attendance throughout North America.
Essential
- Ability to express design ideas through hand or computer-generated sketches.
- Experience creating reports and presentations, with proven skill in layout using Microsoft Office/InDesign/Adobe or equivalent packages.
- Excellent visual assessment and communication skills, including the ability to conceptualize and communicate three‑dimensional ideas in 2D media.
- Experience communicating effectively with people at varying levels within an organization.
- Proactive and imaginative approach to finding solutions within project constraints.
- Confidence in presenting and discussing ideas both internally and externally.
- Ability to factor knowledge of theatre and venue operations into design work to create venues that combine artistic, functional, and audience needs.
Desirable
- Knowledge of contractual issues and the AIA project stages and associated levels of work output.
- Excellent drafting skills in 2D and 3D, with competent rendering and visualization skills.
- Experience with Autodesk Revit and BIM documentation.
- Experience creating and navigating VR models for design visualization.
- Experience designing theatre building elements such as rigging, staging, stage lighting, audiovisual, or acoustic design elements.
- Basic knowledge of technical systems for a performance venue, including lighting, rigging, or AV systems, and awareness of backstage architectural planning, environmental, and acoustical design parameters.
- Understanding of local and state building codes and safety legislation relevant to design work.
- Ability to assess sightlines and audience accommodation concepts in all public areas of a venue.
- Highly organized, excellent time management skills, and reliable.
- Attention to detail and high level of accuracy.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Adept at multi‑tasking.
- Ability to work calmly under pressure.
- Friendly and professional manners.
- Capable of working successfully independently and as part of a global team.
