Position Summary

Prescribes medications for providing treatment to patients with psychological disorders, serves as consultant to primary care and behavioral health providers in determining appropriate prescribing plans.

Brief Description

Position Summary

Provides direct diagnosis and treatment of medical, psychiatric and neurological problems of patients including comprehensive diagnostic mental health services in the primary care setting. Prescribes medications for providing treatment to patients with psychological disorders, serves as consultant to primary care and behavioral health providers in determining appropriate prescribing plans.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

The psychiatrist will support primary care and behavioral health providers in managing patient mental health care with the following responsibilities:

  • Provides quality psychiatric consultation to providers and staff including clinical and medication management consultation (e.g. medication decision, changing medications, monitoring drug levels, managing side effects) within an integrated primary care consulting psychiatry model.
  • Provides direct specialty psychiatric services within an integrated primary care to patients as needed; conjoint visits with medical and/or behavioral health providers as needed. Follow up is provided for patients referred via medical providers.
  • Cultivates education, administration and self-management skills for targeted patient populations with psychiatric concerns.
  • Collaborates and co-manages the patient’s psychiatric care with consistent, expeditious feedback to referring providers.
  • Promotes medical and behavioral health providers’ knowledge of patient’s psychiatric issues and medications; provides education to assist with enhancing primary care utilization of behavioral health interventions and psychiatric medications in primary care
  • Provides supervision for psychologists with additional training in psychopharmacology and/or a license to prescribe in accordance with guidelines for the state of Illinois as needed; may assist in the education, training, and supervision of students and residents.
  • Participates as a member of a multidisciplinary team to facilitate teamwork, improve patient care processes and outcomes.
  • Maintains close collaboration with the Director of Behavioral Health in order to promote efficient and effective service delivery within the clinic.
  • Responds to on-site crisis intervention according to policy.
  • Attends monthly agency staff department meetings; maintains a level of involvement with the health center committees, as needed, to ensure quality patient care. Participates in peer/chart review, performance evaluations, and quality improvement efforts.
  • Utilizes electronic medical records to document psychiatric assessments, interventions and treatment plans in a timely manner according to policy.
  • Maintains professional competence by pursuing opportunities for continuous learning, attending continuing education offerings, reading professional literature, and engaging in other activities, which develop new knowledge and skills.
Required Knowledge, Education, Experience Or Licensure/Registration

  • Doctorate of medicine from an accredited institution
  • Completion of residency program with Certification in Psychiatry and clinical experience
  • Board Certification (or eligible) in Psychiatry and maintenance of certification;
    State licensure to practice medicine in the state of Illinois
  • CPR Certified
  • Knowledge and experience in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health conditions with diverse patient populations
  • Fluency of Spanish language is a plus
