The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools seek a Math teacher for a long-term substitute position in the high school. The department emphasizes engaging, inquiry-based learning and a commitment to a diverse and inclusive learning community.
OverviewMath teachers develop and execute engaging and interactive math lessons to help students think critically and independently. Responsibilities include curriculum development, supervising students in and out of the classroom, and maintaining up-to-date teaching techniques to provide a high-quality educational experience. Strong communication with families and collaboration with colleagues are essential.
Responsibilities- The Math Department is responsible for the math education of students in grades 6 - 12.
- Courses include Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, Discrete Math, Statistics, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus.
- Two levels of math classes (regular and accelerated), both college preparatory. Teachers report to their Principals and to the Math Department Chair.
- Anticipated start date for this position is 01/05/2026.
- Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and work with students flexibly.
- Ability to interact with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and parents.
- Knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom and in relationships with students.
- Strong knowledge of the course subject matter and instructional methodologies.
- Ability to develop curricula, lesson plans, and assessment tools.
- Analytical, problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills.
- Verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to handle stressful situations; ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Proficiency with standard productivity software (e.g., Microsoft Office, calendar/schedule software).
- Bachelor's degree in Math or related field required; advanced degree preferred.
- Two years of teaching experience required; high school math experience strongly preferred; curriculum development experience preferred.
- Experience working with a diverse student population preferred.
- Ability to move around the classroom and school to interact with students, staff, and families; move equipment as needed.
- Ability to escort students between classes during arrival and dismissal; respond in emergency situations as appropriate.
- Ability to demonstrate lessons when appropriate.

Benefits and Pay- Pay Range: $12,139.50 - $12,878.70. The included pay rate or range represents the university’s good faith estimate at the time of posting.
