Peer Tutor - Biology at City Colleges of Chicago
We are looking for a part‑time biology peer tutor to provide academic assistance and support to students, helping them develop competency in course work, improve study skills, and become independent learners.
Responsibilities- Provide general academic support, including tutorial services and basic skills assistance.
- Help students with basic skills in the required academic area.
- Offer one‑on‑one support and encouragement to develop self‑confidence and independence.
- Engage tutees in active learning and support their positive attitudes toward learning.
- Listen and answer questions during tutoring sessions, teaching study skills and independent learning strategies.
- Attend and successfully complete required tutor training meetings.
- Plan tutoring sessions using a collaborative learning approach to improve understanding, problem solving, and study skills.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Applicants must be 16 years or older, have work‑permit consent, and be eligible to work in the United States.
- Applicants must be actively attending a City Colleges of Chicago institution.
- Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of six semester‑hour pre‑credit or credit classes.
- Applicants must be pursuing an approved educational credential, degree, or certificate.
- Applicants must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (waived for first‑semester new students).
- Applicants must be in "good standing" and have no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions.
- Applicants must not be current full‑time or part‑time employees of the City Colleges of Chicago.
- All positions are employment at‑will.
- Working knowledge of the subject area or course content to be tutored.
- Some knowledge of tutoring strategies used to assist tutees in learning how to think and problem‑solve in the context of a specific discipline or subject area.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Organizational and time‑management skills.
- Reasoning and problem‑solving skills.
- Skill in tutoring students and explaining content in more than one way.
- Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment.
- Ability to manage tasks, time, and maintain schedules.
- Ability to guide tutoring sessions.
- High school diploma required or actively pursuing a GED at City Colleges of Chicago.
- Overall GPA of 3.0 and a 4.0 GPA in a specific subject matter.
- Strong background in math, science, literature, or another assigned academic subject matter.
- Ability to work in a one‑on‑one or team environment with flexible work hours as needed for scheduled shifts.
- Prior tutoring experience preferred, but not required.
Salary: $17.00/hr
The rate paid is in accordance with City Colleges approved salary scale.
