Peer Tutor - Biology at City Colleges of Chicago

We are looking for a part‑time biology peer tutor to provide academic assistance and support to students, helping them develop competency in course work, improve study skills, and become independent learners.

• Provide general academic support, including tutorial services and basic skills assistance.
• Help students with basic skills in the required academic area.
• Offer one‑on‑one support and encouragement to develop self‑confidence and independence.
• Engage tutees in active learning and support their positive attitudes toward learning.
• Listen and answer questions during tutoring sessions, teaching study skills and independent learning strategies.
• Attend and successfully complete required tutor training meetings.
• Plan tutoring sessions using a collaborative learning approach to improve understanding, problem solving, and study skills.
• Perform related duties as required.

• Applicants must be 16 years or older, have work‑permit consent, and be eligible to work in the United States.
• Applicants must be actively attending a City Colleges of Chicago institution.
• Applicants must be enrolled in a minimum of six semester‑hour pre‑credit or credit classes.
• Applicants must be pursuing an approved educational credential, degree, or certificate.
• Applicants must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA (waived for first‑semester new students).
• Applicants must be in "good standing" and have no City Colleges of Chicago academic restrictions.
• Applicants must not be current full‑time or part‑time employees of the City Colleges of Chicago.
• All positions are employment at‑will.

• Working knowledge of the subject area or course content to be tutored.
• Some knowledge of tutoring strategies used to assist tutees in learning how to think and problem‑solve in the context of a specific discipline or subject area.
• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Organizational and time‑management skills.
• Reasoning and problem‑solving skills.
• Skill in tutoring students and explaining content in more than one way.
• Ability to work within a culturally diverse environment.
• Ability to manage tasks, time, and maintain schedules.
• Ability to guide tutoring sessions.

• High school diploma required or actively pursuing a GED at City Colleges of Chicago.
• Overall GPA of 3.0 and a 4.0 GPA in a specific subject matter.
• Strong background in math, science, literature, or another assigned academic subject matter.
• Ability to work in a one‑on‑one or team environment with flexible work hours as needed for scheduled shifts.
• Prior tutoring experience preferred, but not required.

Salary: $17.00/hr

The rate paid is in accordance with City Colleges approved salary scale.
