Teacher Assistant - Head Start

Pay Grade: 202
Base Pay Range: $17.00/hr - $20.40/hr
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Safety:
Demonstrates safety practices, minimizes potential hazards, provides adequate supervision and safety instruction. - Health:
Maintains a healthy classroom environment; assists the teacher in planning activities that promote personal health and nutrition. - Learning Environment:
Maintains learning environment and provides choice of learning center activities for at least sixty minutes each day. - Physical:
Assists teacher with activities promoting physical development; maintains a conducive environment. - Cognitive:
Supports questioning, exploration, problem-solving; helps children develop conceptual frameworks with activities in classification, seriation, number, spatial relations, representation, time; promotes listening, articulation, adult-child and child-child communication. - Creative:
Supplies equipment that encourages creativity; encourages innovative uses and divergent thinking. - Self:
Assesses each child's skill level, writes observation notes weekly on C.A.R., summarizes skills twice per year on C.O.R., plans activities maximizing success, provides positive feedback. - Social:
Plans activities that develop awareness of feelings and emotions; capitalizes on empathy; serves as role model. - Guidance:
Maintains environment conducive to preventive discipline, sets limits, maintains positive classroom control, organizes transitions, focuses on activity rather than behavior, encourages self-control, avoids excessive lining up, guides appropriate behavior choices. - Families:
Involves parents in classroom and home programs, shares progress, plans in-home activities, makes home visits September/October and April/May, liaises between components and parents. - Program Management:
Uses resources for curriculum, plans programs timely, completes lessons, submits records and attendance accurately, uses personnel, ensures team cooperation, supervises aides. - Professionalism:
Maintains professional attitude, keeps abreast of early childhood practices. - Other Duties:
All other duties as assigned.
- Associate of Arts degree in early childhood education.
- Two years of experience in a pre-school setting.
- Some experience with young children.
- Some knowledge of social service programs helpful.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated initiative and self-starter.
- Positive attitude and flexibility with changing job situations or priorities.
- Attention to detail.
- Commitment to support and uphold the mission of The Salvation Army.
