Nutrition Support Services (NSS) offers all CPS students breakfast, lunch, and, at select schools, after-school meals at no charge. Meals are offered every school day, during Saturday school programs, and during the summer. Meals comply with nutrition standards set forth in the USDA’s Child Nutrition Program meal patterns.
Job SummaryUnder the supervision of the School Dining Manager, the Porter maintains the cleanliness and sanitation of the school kitchen, in compliance with department guidelines, and performs related duties as required and assigned.
Responsibilities- Assemble and transport soiled dishes, trays, and utensils from dining areas; operate dishwashing machines and replenish dinnerware items.
- Assist in serving food to customers.
- Fulfill storeroom requisitions and maintain storeroom order.
- Responsible for the rotation of stock. Lift and carry bulk commodities to designated areas.
- Sweep and mop kitchen, serving areas, storerooms, lunchrooms, lunchroom restrooms, and locker areas; wash pots, pans, shelves, tables, and walls.
- Clean and sanitize countertops, work areas, storage areas, and various food service equipment; scrape dishes and trays.
- De-lime dishwashing machines as necessary.
- Assist in the implementation of new programs within Nutrition Support Services.
- Complete all USDA mandated training hours.
Education Required:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Food Handlers Certificate or a Chicago Department of Public Health Food Service Managers Certificate.
Experience
Required:
- 1 year of previous work experience, or an equivalent combination of related training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of basic sanitation principles and practices. Must have basic math skills and be able to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and use fractions. Must be able to handle all types of food.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions, and basic skills in performing sanitation duties.
- Required to lift or exert a force of 25-40 lbs. frequently and 50-100 lbs. occasionally.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time, stoop, crouch, climb, bend, reach, handle and finger objects.
- Must be able to consistently move yourself and things around in a safe and efficient manner.
- Must be able to taste and smell in order to identify flavors and odors and exercise frequent use of near visual acuity with the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
- Must be able to work in environments with some temperature extremes.
As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:
Establish/Maintain Chicago Residency – Employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district. The Chicago residency requirement does not apply to temporary/part-time positions, however, all CPS employees must be residents of Illinois.
