The Seara Group at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE), University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), invites outstanding candidates for two fully funded PhD positions starting in Fall 2026.

Research Focus

The Seara Group investigates emergent mechanics and dynamics of complex systems, spanning from colloidal particles to living cells and societal behaviors. Current themes include adaptive sociohydrodynamics, excitability in swarms, learning in active materials, and mechanochemical control of biological materials. The group combines minimal mathematical modeling, data‑driven discovery, and close collaborations with experimentalists.

Candidate Profile
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field.
  • Strong interest in theoretical and computational research.
  • Curiosity, persistence, strong communication skills.
  • Motivated to develop new analytical and computational tools and contribute to a collaborative and innovative research group.
