Freelance Model Maker; Independent Contractor

Kaleidoscope is a Chicago-based creative production company specializing in prototyping, premedia, print, proofing, model-making, and fabrication. Our Model Shop takes retail packaging and product concepts from design intent to physical prototype, ranging from quick, low-fidelity studies to high-fidelity presentation models.

We’re building a bench of experienced freelance model makers to support our Model Shop during peak workloads and on specialized projects. Engagements are project-based and may range from a few days to several weeks. You’ll own specific models or sub-assemblies from start to finish, working alongside our Senior Model Makers, painters, designers, and engineers.

This is a great fit if you’re an independent fabricator who likes variety, works well on deadline, and takes pride in craftsmanship.

• Building physical models from drawings, artwork, CAD files, and design direction

• Fabricating parts and assemblies with hand tools, power tools, and pattern shop machinery

• Detailed hand finishing to presentation-quality standards

• Modifying existing CAD files (Solid Works or equivalent) for fabrication

• Silicone mold making and urethane casting

• Basic CNC and rapid prototyping work

• Preparing models and components for paint, finishing, and final presentation

• Identifying fabrication challenges and proposing practical solutions

• 3–6+ years of professional experience in model making, prototyping, or fabrication

• Strong command of hand tools, power tools, and pattern shop machinery

• Working knowledge of CNC machining and rapid prototyping processes

• CAD skills in Solid Works or equivalent (modification-focused)

• Solid understanding of model-making materials, finishes, and manufacturing processes

• A portfolio showing range and finish quality

• Ability to work independently, manage your own time against project deadlines, and communicate clearly with project stakeholders

A degree in Model Making, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field is a plus, but your portfolio and experience matter most.

• Type: Independent contractor (1099)

• Location: On-site at our Chicago shop

• Rate: [$25–$35+/hour or project-based, depending on experience]

• Availability: [e.g., flexible engagements; priority for availability with 1–2 weeks’ notice]

• Shop access: Access to our pattern shop machinery, CNC, and rapid prototyping equipment is provided. [Specify if contractors should bring personal hand tools.]

• Requirements: Signed NDA, W-9, and [proof of general liability insurance, if required]. Adherence to shop safety protocols while on-site.
