POSITION SUMMARYThe role of Wind and Site Engineer directly supports Nordex's mission to develop and deliver clean power plants that make 100% renewable energy a reality for the world. As a Wind and Site Engineer, you will support the North American sales team by evaluating wind resources, recommending appropriate turbine models, determining annual energy production, and preparing site assessment reports for prospective wind energy projects.
This role is instrumental in optimizing project layouts, improving bid competitiveness, and reducing the cost of energy through advanced site and resource analysis.
- Serve as the subject matter expert on meteorological conditions and turbine suitability for prospective wind projects.
- Perform wind resource assessments using software such as WindPRO, WAsP, and other industry-standard modeling tools.
- Process and analyze meteorological data from met towers, SoDARs, and LiDARs, including data cleaning, long-term MCP analysis, and turbulence assessments.
- Develop wind flow models and perform annual energy production (AEP) analyses, including losses, uncertainties, and site-specific environmental conditions.
- Evaluate extreme wind conditions, turbulence intensity, fatigue loads, flow inclination, temperature, and air density impacts on turbine performance.
- Develop and recommend curtailment strategies when site conditions require mitigation of turbulence or fatigue loading.
- Prepare comprehensive Site Assessment Reports to support sales and service sales activities.
- Collaborate closely with Sales Managers to optimize layouts and maximize annual energy production for customer projects.
- Support customer needs through project analyses, site visits, customer meetings, shadow flicker studies, sound assessments, GIS analysis, meteorological campaign design, and basic balance-of-plant (BOP) evaluations.
- Work effectively across multiple concurrent projects while meeting strict deadlines and maintaining high-quality deliverables.
- Bachelor's degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, Renewable Energy, or a related field;
Master's degree preferred. - Minimum of 3 years of experience in the wind energy industry, preferably in wind resource assessment or energy yield analysis.
- Strong knowledge of boundary layer meteorology, wind turbine mechanical loads, meteorological instrumentation, and statistical uncertainty analysis.
- Proficiency with WindPRO, WAsP, Open Wind, QGIS, Microsoft Office, and wind resource analysis tools.
- Experience with wind farm layout optimization and meteorological data analysis.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, work under tight deadlines, and collaborate across interdisciplinary teams.
- Strong customer-facing communication and presentation skills.
- Working knowledge of IEC 61400 standards preferred.
- Experience with CFD wind modeling, MATLAB, Visual Basic programming, SQL, Access databases, and GIS platforms such as ArcGIS, Global Mapper, or QGIS is considered an asset.
- Willingness to travel up to 10% as required.
- Driving is an essential function of the job. Must possess a full valid driver's license and be insurable under our auto insurance policy. This position will be subject to periodic driver's abstract checks to confirm continued insurability.
The ideal candidate must:
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of and commitment to safety protocols and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and company policies.
- Proactively identify and mitigate potential safety hazards.
- Properly use applicable safety equipment, including but not limited to eye protection, hearing protectors, steel-toe boots, and hard hats. Loose-fitting clothes and jewelry are not permitted.
- Communicate effectively with team members and management to ensure a safe working environment.
