Open to the public and City employees under the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement (BID units 1, 3, 4, &
5). Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Starting Salary: $68,616.00 annually.

Essential Duties
  • Under supervision, review electronically submitted building permit applications to ensure compliance with the Chicago Zoning Ordinance and perform related duties as required.
  • Review building permit applications, architectural drawings, and construction plans of moderate complexity to determine if intended property and land use is in compliance with designated zoning classifications.
  • Check zoning maps and ordinances to determine appropriate classification and district of plans under review.
  • Check building size, occupancy, and off‑street parking plans for zoning code compliance.
  • Review sign permits for compliance with sign and billboard regulations.
  • Forward applications to other City departments for compliance review for planned development projects or special certification or licensing requirements.
  • Review court orders and documents granting variations and explain to customers why their application was denied.
  • Approve applications found to be in compliance with the zoning ordinance.
  • Calculate fees for plan review.
  • Interpret the zoning ordinance to applicants and the general public.
  • Maintain records of applications reviewed and prepare related reports.
  • Review applications for driveways and occupancy placards.

Additional duties may be required for this position.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of work experience in the review and evaluation of legal descriptions of property and construction or building plans; OR
  • An associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university, plus one (1) year of work experience in the review and evaluation of legal descriptions of property and construction or building plans.
Selection Requirements

This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will include a skills assessment as part of the interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of the interview, will be selected.

Initial evaluation will be based on the information provided on the application and the documents submitted. Department of Human Resources staff will review applications after the final posting date. Staff will follow all required employment/hiring plan provisions, federal, state, and local laws, and collective bargaining agreements when applicable. Staff will apply hiring preferences as required by the municipal code. Placement on an eligibility list is not an offer or guarantee of an interview or employment with the City of Chicago.
