Base pay range

$28.05/hr - $42.10/hr

Sign On Bonus

This position is eligible for up to a $6,000.00 sign on bonus.

Major Responsibilities

• Functions in the scrub role on surgical procedures as a member of the surgical team
• Ensures that the appropriate instruments and supplies are available as determined by the individual surgeon electronic preference card
• Assists the surgeon and other team members in gowning and gloving and the draping of the surgical field
• Anticipates the needs of the surgeon as demonstrated by having all items required readily available on the sterile field
• Ensures the safety needs of the patient is maintained
• Utilizes appropriate PPE always at the surgical field
• Handles equipment and, sharps and hazardous material and instrumentation in a safe manner which ensures a safe environment
• Labels all medication & solutions placed on the surgical field.
• Participates in the surgical “Time out” and does not allow the procedure to continue to all team members agree.

Preparation and Maintenance of the Sterile Field

• Assists in obtaining all necessary supplies and equipment required to perform a surgical procedure
• Prepares and maintains the sterile field by placing instrumentation, drapes and supplies in the prescribed arrangement
• Ensures all counted items on the surgical fields are accounted for as described in the Surgical Count Policies
• Informs the Team Leader of changes to the physician preference cards
• Ensures proper handling and care of each surgical specimen

Participates in Maintaining the Readiness of the Operating Room

• Informs Team Leader of any malfunctions related to the instrumentation and equipment. Tags affected items and removes item from service
• Returns instruments and equipment to proper areas of the Operating Room and Sterile Core
• Restocks OR suites as necessary
• Maintains all work areas in a clean and orderly fashion

Maintains Professional Work Environment

• Takes departmental trauma/specialty call as assigned
• Participates in the orientation of new staff and students
• Serves as a resource related to area of specialization
• Demonstrates flexibility related to assignments and work hours
• Follows all established policies
• Maintains positive working relationship with other staff members
• Serves as a mentor to other staff related to clinical issues. Readily shares knowledge and experience concerning surgical procedures
• Participates in the education of others in the Operating Room by serving in the role of preceptor for areas of expertise
• Promotes patient safety by reporting of issues through established channels and participating as requested in safety initiatives.
• Maintains patient confidentiality

Demonstrates Accountability for Own Self Development

• Identifies learning needs and actively seeks out opportunities to address needs
• Completes all developmental goals and competencies within the established timeframe
• Maintains Educational record.
• Maintains Certification
• Participates on unit/hospital committees and projects
• Maintains 10 CEU’s annually

Licensure

Surgical Technologist

Education/Experience Required

• Graduate of a Surgical Technologist Program
• This position will need to recognize the needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of patients.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

• Ability to work well with internal and external customers
• Fine motor skills
• Ability to wear a surgical mask and gloves
• Auditory skills which allow incumbent to hear individuals whose speech may be muffled
• CPR certified
• Certified Surgical Technologist certification.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions

• Ability to work under stressful conditions and in difficult situations
• May be exposed to hazardous materials and life threatening diseases heavy lifting in accordance with DOL definition
• Ability to work rotating shifts and day of the week including holidays and take call as needed
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment with established time constraints.
• Ability to communicate with mask on and not facing others.

If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available.

Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case‑by‑case basis.
