The salary range for this position is $26.46 - $33.07 (Hourly Rate). Placement within the salary range is dependent on relevant work experience and internal equity. For positions represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range is guided by the collective bargaining agreement.

Description

The Medical Laboratory Technician reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and other regulatory and accreditation standards.

A Medical Laboratory Technician performs test procedures in a clinical laboratory and conveys the results to the physician or designee in an accurate and timely manner for the purpose of patient diagnosis and treatment.

Responsibilities
  • Pre‑analytic workflow: ensure orders are entered correctly, specimens collected are appropriate for the test ordered and are correctly processed/transported.
  • Verify orders and non‑patient information according to established protocol.
  • Handle unresolved orders, troubleshoot where needed, inform senior staff of resolutions, and escalates promptly when unable to resolve.
  • Verify specimens for add‑on tests and generate add‑on test orders.
  • Recognize fraud and abuse compliance issues requiring adjustments to the test order.
  • Collect, receive, and process specimens: verify correct labeling, evaluate for appropriateness, document unacceptable specimens, notify senior staff, prioritize processing, aliquot according to protocols.
  • Perform analytical testing following established written protocols and SOPs.
  • Maintain test system integrity: perform preventive maintenance, verify reagents and supplies, monitor inventory levels, perform and record quality control, evaluate QC results.
  • Perform specimen preparation: pre‑test preparation, filtering, extraction, etc.; transfer or ship specimens to approved testing locations.
  • Perform waived, moderate, and high complexity testing and prioritize testing to meet defined turnaround times.
  • Recognize age‑specific protocols, respond to workflow changes, and monitor daily workflow to ensure service levels.
  • Technical review and interpretation: review results for completeness, evaluate test results, provide correct interpretations, recognize unusual results and perform reflex testing or follow‑up actions.
  • Follow notification protocols for critical values and other requests.
  • Troubleshoot problems: identify performance problems, take corrective actions, escalates unresolved issues, and print pending logs.
  • Post‑test specimen storage: store specimens and related materials according to protocols and retrieve when needed.
Universal Responsibilities
  • Follow written SOPs and operate instruments/equipment according to protocol.
  • Use computers according to established protocol; follow downtime procedures as required.
