Description: The Clinical Lab Assistant contributes to the mission and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and regulatory standards.
Scheduling: This position is regularly scheduled to work full‑time, 40 hours weekly, on the overnight shift. Shift times are subject to change based on departmental and patient care needs. After training/orientation, the role is anticipated to work from 10:00 PM – 6:30 AM, with a weekend and holiday rotation.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with main lab staff, ancillary departments, nurses and providers to ensure excellent patient care.
- Receive specimens into the laboratory information system.
- Input and retrieve lab results in the laboratory or hospital computer system.
- Register specimen drop‑offs (e.g., Home Health) in the LAB system ensuring accurate data entry.
- Distribute specimens to the appropriate testing area.
- Identify and solve problems using available resources with assistance from supervisors, managers, pathologists and coworkers when appropriate.
- Accurately perform waived testing under the direction of CLS as applicable.
- Ensure appropriate sample type, container, and volume are received for testing ordered.
- Communicate specimen rejections, critical/notifiable results to appropriate clinical personnel and complete required documentation.
- May review/record refrigerator temperature(s) and QC/QA records; document concerns through the Corrective Action Log and report to maintenance for repair.
- Adhere to lab procedures and follow up on outstanding orders, including time‑sensitive draws/charges.
- Pull AP slides for second‑opinion requests and log material back into Epic when returned.
- Answer phone calls to the laboratory and triage appropriately.
- Coordinate courier pickups as needed.
Department Specific:
- May perform phlebotomy and other lab specimen collections per age‑related standards as required.
Qualifications (Required):
- High School Diploma.
Qualifications (Preferred):
- 1 year of experience in a general lab, specimen processing or phlebotomy department.
