Description

The Phlebotomist reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine. The role adheres to organizational ethics, compliance, policies, and all regulatory standards.

The Phlebotomist provides expert phlebotomy services, demonstrates excellent customer service, and collaborates with a high‑performing team that puts “Patients First.”

Key responsibilities include venipuncture collection, specimen processing, order entry in multiple systems, verification of test results, patient information retrieval, lab reception, and clerical duties.

Responsibilities
  • Perform phlebotomy and other lab specimen collections per age‑related standards and departmental policies.
  • Use the AIDET model, optimize patient safety, and reduce chances of medical errors.
  • Review and enter physician orders, ensuring all necessary information is included and entered accurately.
  • Communicate post‑phlebotomy patient care and provide appropriate patient communication.
  • Process specimens promptly, labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, freezing, and packaging in accordance with protocols.
  • Record refrigerator temperatures, perform QC/QA, and report concerns via the Corrective Action Log.
  • Maintain equipment operation, follow up on manifest logs, and communicate specimen procurement issues.
  • Maintain a safe work environment, handle biohazard waste, and store items properly.
  • Perform lab clerical duties: order entry, test result verification, patient data retrieval, inventory management, filing, and sanitizing equipment.
  • Use resources efficiently, participate in cost‑saving and process‑streamlining initiatives.
  • Complete continuing education and sign off on competency assessments.
  • Collaborate within a team, provide professional assistance to others.
  • Use critical thinking and sound judgment to resolve challenging situations.
  • Adhere to all ethical business practices.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications – Required
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy certification through a nationally recognized organization, or training from a phlebotomy school/medical institution, or at least one year of phlebotomy experience in a health‑care setting, or CMA certification.
Qualifications – Preferred
  • Experience performing phlebotomy on a broad range of patients.
  • Experience with lab specimen handling, transferring specimens, and operating a centrifuge.
  • Familiarity with medical EMR systems.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
