Pay Range: $16.75–$21.07 per hour
The Phlebotomist obtains blood specimens from patients by venipuncture and, after proficiency, performs skin puncture on neonates and venipuncture on children and adolescents. The role serves as liaison between physicians and Rush Medical Laboratories, collecting specimens for routine, timed, and STAT collections, and collaborating with the healthcare team.
Other Information- High School graduate.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- National Phlebotomy Association or equivalent certification.
- Two years of phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting.
- Works throughout patient care areas and laboratories.
- Frequent exposure to potentially infectious diseases and body fluids.
- Requires bending, standing and walking for the majority of the workday.
- Suggests and develops new ideas and approaches in the workplace.
- Creates constructive relationships to achieve positive clinical or service outcomes with peers, management, customers, and other departments.
- Responds promptly to pages.
- Volunteers to help others complete work when time permits.
- Reports back to the laboratory for further assignment after work is complete.
- Verifies patient identification and labels specimens according to SOP at all times.
- Collects specimens using proper phlebotomy technique, adhering to laboratory requirements and the order of draw.
- Demonstrates thorough technical knowledge, including timed collections, appropriate specimen sites, and proper scheduling.
- Attends and documents required hours of continuing education.
- Helps train students and new employees; completes training checklists within deadlines.
- Collects timed specimens within 30 minutes of scheduled time; sends routine specimens via pneumatic tube within 45 minutes, timed specimens within 10 minutes.
- Maintains a clean, organized work area, phlebotomy cart and personal appearance.
- Stocks supplies appropriately and replenishes them at shift end.
- Notifies appropriate personnel promptly of problems or unusual situations, attempting resolution before reporting to supervisor.
- Performs LIS order entry correctly and double‑checks orders against requisitions.
- Performs specimen accessioning and processing; advises physicians and nurses on ordering and scheduling specimen collections.
- Documents missed or delayed draws on the clipboard (NCC) and collection set labels.
- Cancels, reschedules, and clears laboratory orders through communication with ordering providers; documents in LIS.
- Participates in special projects or events such as health screenings and training classes; gathers data on recurrent problems.
- Acts as technical resource and, when designated, oversees operations per departmental guidelines.
