Major Responsibilities

  • Oversees the day-to-day operations for assigned staff for maximum efficiency and productivity. Acts as an expert resource to staff and assists with/resolves complex customer service issues or concerns. Assists supervisor with developing and modifying staffing schedules to support business needs. Makes recommendations and changes to schedules as needs dictate.
  • Assists the supervisor with human resources responsibilities for staff, which may include interviewing and input into selection of new employees, staff development, performance evaluation feedback, resolution of employee concerns, and building employee morale caregiver engagement.
  • Prepares patient for exam. Performs patient interview to determine appropriate patient preparation. Obtains and records vital signs and gathers/documents/updates pertinent health information (i.e. chief complaint, allergies, medications).
  • Performs a variety of laboratory and clinical procedures using principles of aseptic technique and standard precautions / infection control guidelines.
  • Communicates effectively with patient, family or significant others and provides them with necessary emotional support. Follows through with necessary procedure or test requests, pre-approved care algorithms, new appointment times and referral to other facilities or services.
  • Communicates effectively with physicians and other members of the health care team and support staff to ensure patient safety, smooth clinic flow, and makes adjustments as necessary. May participate in team conferences regarding patient problems.
  • Instructs patient regarding routine procedures. Refers questions to registered nurses and physicians/providers per scope of practice guidelines and relays information back to patient as directed. Assists the physician/provider with procedures and surgeries such as pelvic exams, allergy scratch testing, EMG, cautery, colposcopy, etc.
  • Completes routine maintenance and quality monitoring of clinic equipment using appropriate technique when cleaning, sterilizing and caring for instruments and other equipment.
  • Trained and competent as a preceptor for annual competency, new caregiver orientation, or MA students.
  • Identifies, designs, and assists in implementing process changes to improve the department, quality and safety of the patient experience.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age‑specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required
  • Medical Assistant (CMA) certification issued by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification issued by the National Health career Association (NHA), or
  • Medical Assistant (RMA) certification issued by the American Medical Technologists (AMT), or
  • Medical Assistant (NCMA) certification issued by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), and
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 45 days unless department leader has determined it is not required.
Education Required
  • Completion of an accredited or approved program in Medical Assistant.
Experience Required
  • Typically requires 2 years of experience in performing as a medical assistant which includes demonstrated competency in performing: injections, immunizations, EKG, obtaining vital signs, routine medication administration, aseptic technique and infection control guidelines.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Demonstrated leadership skills such as: team building, ability to delegate and provide work direction effectively, organization / managing multiple priorities, etc.
