Job Description SummaryThe Unit Assistant will perform routine clerical duties in a nursing unit related to patient admissions, discharges, conditions and administrative matters. Performs reception duties including answering telephones, relaying messages, contacting patients' families and physicians when requested, etc. Enters charge and order data into the hospital computer system. Arrange sand assists in transportation and transfer of patients to other departments.

The Unit Assistant will demonstrate Shirley Ryan Ability Lab Core Attributes:

Perform reception activities including answering phone, greeting internal and external customers, routing incoming and outgoing mail, and maintaining inventory of necessary supplies.
Determine the nature of patient or visitor needs/requests, securing the appropriate resource and monitoring follow-up for satisfaction.
Respond to patient call lights, including emergencies.
Ensure that the center work area is orderly and presents a positive image of the nursing unit.
Obtain necessary documentation/consents from patients/families required upon admission, ensuring all patient consents are signed within 24 hours of admission.
Obtain copies of insurance information, picture IDs and sends them to the correct department.
Maintain files of emergency information for each patient including current history and physical exam, face sheet, copy of DNR form, blood consent (as applicable).
Prepare paperwork for patients upon discharge.
Distribute patient therapy schedules ensuring the most recent schedule is available to necessary personnel.
Audit adherence to specific policies and procedures (infection control, DNR and others as requested), utilizing reports from the EMR system.
Assist with orientating new staff to the functions of the nurses' station, phones, access doors, Cap Mgt, and Guardian.
Schedule patient appointments including arranging transportation and notifying relevant parties of scheduling conflicts.
Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab.
Reports directly to the Nurse Manager
High School Diploma or 1-2 years of college or other post high school training or equivalent experience.
Proficiency in keyboarding skills. Application of a variety of simple computer PC software and office equipment (photocopying, fax machine, multi-line phone, etc.).
Basic communication and interpersonal skills necessary to interact appropriately with internal/external customers in various circumstances.
Organizational skills necessary to efficiently prioritize and complete a variety of tasks.
Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting in order to maximize quality and efficiently of operations.
Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.
