Assistant Corporation Counsel III – Special Federal Litigation Division

The City of Chicago’s Law Department is seeking an attorney for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel III in the Special Federal Litigation (SFL) Division.

The Division defends alleged civil rights violations or state law liability claims based on allegations of police misconduct or abuse of authority in both federal and state courts. The Division defends the City of Chicago against allegations such as
* Monell* policy claims; and also defends sworn and civilian police personnel against allegations such as false arrest and excessive force. ACCs must have sophisticated and complex litigation skills involving extensive motion practice, client counseling, intensive fact and expert discovery, and trial practice in lower exposure cases. They work under the supervision of the Supervisors and Chiefs in their Section, and the Deputy of SFL.

They will be joining a hardworking, sharp team of litigators dedicated to public service to the City of Chicago.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Litigation experience in drafting pleadings, motions, defending depositions, evidentiary hearings, assisting in trials, or clerking for a state or federal court judge.
  • Superior writing, research, and editing skills.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience counseling and advising clients.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Initiative on assigned tasks.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, monitor, and control workflow deadlines.
  • Commitment to public service.
  • Admission to the Illinois Bar (or eligibility for admission on motion to the Illinois Bar pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court Rule 705).
  • Good standing with your state Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission.
Mandatory Submission Terms
  • Cover letter including the position title, job number, and specific evidence of how you meet the minimum qualifications and the KS/abilities. Include why you are interested in working in the Federal Civil Rights Litigation Division.
  • Resume.
  • Official or unofficial law school transcript.
  • Two writing samples (one should contain legal analysis in the form of a “legal brief” or “litigation source” material).
  • Current printout of attorney registration status from the Illinois ARDC website (or your admitted state bar's equivalent including public record of discipline and pending proceedings).

Salary

$85,704.00 – $ (includes a variety of factors such as experience and credentials).
