The Biological Sciences Division – Facilities Services (BSD‑FS) group provides the environment in which these meaningful results can happen.
We are responsible for managing approximately 2 million gross feet of space located throughout the University of Chicago’s Hyde Park campus. We serve many community members including but not limited to: research and non‑research faculty, principal investigators, laboratory staff, residents, hospital staff, undergraduate students and post‑doctoral scholars. BSD‑FS consists of the following major functional areas of responsibility:

2) Project Management Services,
3) Building Management,
4) Space Management,
5) Capital Planning,
6) Lease Management,
7) Architectural Services,
8) Signage, and
9) Furniture.
Job Summary
:
The dock manager supervises a team of support staff responsible for the materials and services operation while supporting the efficient distribution of materials and services to job sites and other inventory stocking locations on campus. Implements inventory control procedures. The BSD‑FS Dock Manager supports the achievement of BSD’s scientific and educational goals by delivering logistical and event operation services across the BSD campus buildings.
As the main point of contact, the Dock Manager provides shipping, receiving, event set‑up and tear‑down services and collaborates with vendors, faculty, and university departments to maintain the BSD mission and Elevate 2035 initiative. The role requires communication with all levels of personnel and may require non‑standard work hours to support major deliveries, large‑scale events or emergencies.
- Supervises effective delivery of logistical services for all BSD campus buildings.
- Administers, implements, and enforces effective policies and procedures with the BSD‑FS union clerk staff; includes staff scheduling in collaboration with the BSD‑FS Director of Plant and Facility Operations.
- Manages KCBD loading dock space to create a safe and organized workplace environment.
- Manages package receipt and delivery activities for BSD campus buildings, including lost/misplaced packages and tanks; directly supervises BSD‑FS union clerk staff.
- Maintains and provides equipment necessary for completing dock activities (e.g., forklift, delivery vehicles); monitors staff usage and schedules maintenance as needed.
- Coordinates equipment disposal service in collaboration with departmental/divisional groups.
- Collaborates with BSD Building Management group on scheduling BSD‑FS staff for events in BSD space.
- Monitors and reports package/tank delivery services via internal logistics system (QTrak).
- Tracks and manages BSD‑FS union clerk staff administrative needs, including safety training compliance, attendance, and interdisciplinary action.
- Performs financial purchasing activities on behalf of the BSD‑FS team, including invoices for contractual services.
- Performs dock tasks on an as‑needed basis.
- Maintains shipping and receiving activities and records; resolves related problems; coordinates with vendors and budget to ensure quality and pricing of supplies and equipment meet expectations.
