ASTM Laboratory Technician — Hoffman Estates, IL

This is a full‑time position located in Hoffman Estates, IL with Bureau Veritas North America.

About the Role

The ASTM Laboratory Technician will provide technical expertise and non‑routine problem‑solving skills to support analytical and testing services in a safe, legal, and ethical manner.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform chemical tests and analysis of fuel and oil samples by ASTM/ISO and other documented test procedures.
  • Revise internal test procedures as new capabilities are added or existing methods are updated.
  • Participate in internal and external quality and proficiency programs, including sample analysis and preparation of final reports.
  • Devise and apply methodology for dealing with analytical problems lacking published procedures.
  • Operate laboratory equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, agitators, viscometers, balance scales, spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs, and colorimeters.
  • Record test results on standardized forms and write test reports describing procedures used; prepare graphs and charts.
  • Clean, sterilize, and calibrate laboratory equipment.
  • Prepare chemical solutions according to standard formulas.
  • Add chemicals or raw materials to process solutions or product batches to meet specifications.
  • Adhere to professionalism and scientific method principles, basing decisions on education, experience, observation, and deduction.
  • Participate actively in facility and workflow management.
  • Assist in monitoring, measuring, and assessing quality assurance practices for continual improvement.
  • Assist with troubleshooting instrumentation problems, calibrations, and quality assurance protocols.
  • Perform all above responsibilities in line with Company safety, quality, ethics, and environmental policies, exercising good judgment and diplomacy.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; internships and lab experience considered; a degree in a scientific field, ideally chemistry, is preferred.
  • Language

    Skills:

    Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedural manuals; ability to write routine reports; ability to speak effectively before groups of employees.
  • Mathematical

    Skills:

    Ability to perform basic arithmetic, rate, ratio, and percentage calculations; interpret graphs and technical reports.
  • Reasoning Ability: Understand and follow technical procedures, solve practical problems, and handle varying levels of standardization.
  • Certificates: None required.
  • Physical Demands: Regular standing, use of hands/fingers, speaking, hearing, and smelling; occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs; tasks require color vision; work may involve movement near mechanical parts, exposure to chemicals, noise, and occasionally radiation.
  • Work Environment: Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, electrical shock, and moderate to loud noise levels.
