.
The Manual Machinist is responsible for the fabrication, modification, and operation of industrial machine tools and parts to precise specifications. This role involves developing and maintaining these tools using knowledge of mechanics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. The machinist will be familiar with machinery such as vertical turret lathes, manual lathes, horizontal boring mills, and grinders.
Key Tasks- Set up and manually machine components and parts for all types of pumps in a custom job shop.
- Machine to specifications including impellers, wear‑rings, bearing housings, covers, and seals.
- Interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and sketches to determine methods of operation.
- Perform precision metal cutting, grinding, shaping, and fitting with various machinery including horizontal and vertical boring mills, and /OD grinders.
- Check dimensions of critical components and translate them into numerical form using inspection equipment.
- Evaluate machining procedures to ensure optimal efficiency.
- Maintain machine tools and equipment in proper operational condition.
- Comply with Hydro shop safety policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with engineers, shop personnel, and other machinists to troubleshoot problems and recommend solutions.
- Knowledge of basic mathematics and ability to apply it in a shop setting.
- Knowledge of geometry to compute angles, radii, bolt circles, and other dimensions.
- Knowledge of feed rates and the effects of adjustments.
- Skill in setting up jigs, fixtures, arbors, mandrels, centers, and clamps.
- Ability to machine pump shafts of 3–10 ft and hold close tolerances of 0.0005 or less using a steady rest.
- Attention to detail.
- Manual and finger dexterity.
- Coordination and control precision.
- 5+ years of post‑training experience working as a machinist in an industrial facility machining large parts on manual machines.
- Completion of a technical or vocational training program related to machinery (Journeyman status preferred).
