The Salvation Army is serving more people in need and delivering the broadest array of services than any other not-for-profit organization in Chicagoland. The Salvation Army is making an impact every day in three key areas of critical importance and concern to people across Chicagoland -- Homelessness, Violence and Education. And, The Salvation Army is delivering the most critical services -- food, shelter, emergency assistance and disaster relief.

In communities throughout Chicago and the surrounding five-county area, we extend emergency and supportive assistance from 28 corps community centers, 80 service extension units, the Emergency Disaster Services Center, residential programs, mobile units, and several counseling sites.

Volunteer Needs by Phase Phase 1:
Set-Up Phase (Early November)

Tuesday – Friday 12pm-4pm Limited hours until Dec. 1st

• Prepping Sponsor Supplies:
  Organize and prepare materials for our Angel Tree sponsors to ensure they have everything they need to support local families.
• Warehouse Cleaning & Decorating:
  Help transform our warehouse into a festive Santa's Workshop by cleaning, organizing, and decorating the space.
• Angel Tag Organization:
  Prepare and arrange Angel tags for easy access and distribution.
• Administrative Support:
  Assist with data entry, inventory management, and donor communication to ensure smooth operations.

Volunteer Need: 5–10 volunteers per shift

Phase 2:
Crunch Time Gift Prep (First 2 Weeks of December)

10am-6pm Monday-Saturday

As we approach distribution time, we need more hands-on aid to ensure everything is ready for the big day.

• Gift Sorting:
  Help sort through donated gifts, ensuring they are properly matched to recipients and ready for distribution.
• Inventory “Shopping”:
  Assist in selecting additional items from our inventory to fill in any gaps, ensuring every child receives a complete and thoughtful gift.
• Stocking Stuffing:
  Sort and stuff stockings for our Nursing Home program, making sure each one is filled with holiday cheer.
• Donation Bag Placement:
  Organize and place finished donation bags on the floor according to our family box system, ensuring everything is in the right place for easy distribution.
• Assembling & Organizing Bicycles:
  Help assemble and organize bicycles to be given to children.
• General Prep Tasks:
  Provide support with various other preparation tasks as needed, contributing to the smooth operation of the project.

Volunteer Need: 5–10 volunteers per shift

Phase 3:
Distribution/Pick-up Week (December 16–23)

Help us during the final week when families come to collect their gifts!

When Gym Prep - December 15th
Drive Thru Distribution - December 16th

Key Responsibilities

• Traffic Control:
  Help manage the flow of cars as families drive through to pick up their gifts.
• Running Gifts:
  Use shopping carts to bring gifts out to parents waiting in the parking lot.
• Handing Out Food Bags/Boxes:
  Assist with distributing food to families as they receive their gifts.
• Register Walk-ups:
  Coordinate intake for individuals who did not sign up.
• Check in/out:
  Help at the indoor table and ensure correct gifts and items are distributed to those running gifts.
• Refreshment Station:
  Help restock and manage our refreshment station for volunteers and staff.
• Extra Large Gift Distribution:
  Hand out bicycles/large items to identified families.
• Other Tasks as Needed:
  Support various other tasks to ensure a smooth and joyful distribution process.
• Volunteer Need:
  Up to 50 volunteers per shift (12/16–12/20)
