Job SummaryResponsible to provide direct nursing care to the customer and supervise day-to-day nursing activities performed by the nursing assistants, ensuring adherence to federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, regulations, and facility policies to maintain the highest level of quality care.
Qualifications- Current, unencumbered license to practice as RN or LPN in the State of Illinois.
- Current CPR certificate or become certified within two weeks of employment.
- Knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures.
- Interest and/or knowledge in care of the aged.
- Able to read, write, and speak English in an understandable manner.
- Independent decision‑making ability when circumstances warrant such action.
- Ability to deal tactfully with customers, family members, visitors, personnel, government agencies, and the general public.
- Leadership and supervisory ability and willingness to work harmoniously with other personnel.
- Personable, enthusiastic, and resourceful.
- Intermittently move throughout the workday.
- Coping with mental and emotional stress of the position.
- Maintain sight/hearing ability or use prosthetics to enable adequate function.
- Function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and work effectively with customers, family, personnel, and support agencies.
- Good general health and emotional stability.
- Relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people.
- Lift, push, pull, and move equipment, supplies, and customers in excess of 50 pounds throughout the day.
- Subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, including HIV, AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.
- Supports and adjusts as directed by appropriate authority across floors, customers, workloads, and multiple tasks as assigned.
- Plans, develops, organizes, implements, evaluates, and directs nursing procedures and protocols in accordance with established policies.
- Directly supervises and instructs nursing staff to promote job knowledge and adherence to departmental policies.
- Develops written plans of care identifying customer problems/needs.
- Attends and actively participates in customer care conference as directed.
- Reports concerns or complaints from customers or families to the Administrator.
- Counsel and discipline nursing personnel as necessary.
- Conducts daily rounds ensuring personnel perform required duties and procedures are followed; makes physical rounds to all customers daily and with physicians as needed.
- Creates and maintains a warm, personal, and calm environment throughout the department.
- Participates in continuing education programs.
- Recommends equipment and supplies to the Director of Nursing.
- Places orders for medications and treatments following established budgetary guidelines.
- Utilizes PCC 24-hour summary for recommendations related to customer care needs.
- Fills out complete accident/incident reports.
- Encourages attending physicians to review treatment plans and sign orders.
- Charts nurses’ notes describing care provided and customer response.
- Completes required assessments upon customer admission, transfer, and discharge.
- Receives telephone orders, records on Physician’s Order Form and POS.
- Records new or changed diet orders; forwards information to the Dietary Department.
- Performs routine charting duties per charting and documentation policies.
- Handles admission, discharge, and transfer processes.
- Prepares and administers medications and treatments as ordered by the physician.
- Reviews medication record for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to stop order policies.
- Administers professional services such as catheterization, tube feedings, suction, dressing/bandage changes, colostomy and drainage bag care, and end-of-life care as required.
- Participates in orientation of new customers/family to the facility.
- Arranges diagnostic and therapeutic services as ordered by the physician.
- Notifies attending physicians and families of changes in customer condition.
- Obtains sputum, urine, and other lab tests as ordered.
- Takes and records TPRs, blood pressures, accuchecks, etc., as necessary.
- Contacts the customer’s physician for assessments, medication orders, incident reporting, abnormal lab or X-ray results, and other pertinent matters.
- Ensures nurses’ notes and monthly summaries reflect the care plan.
- Attends staff meetings as directed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
