Position Overview

Salary range: $34.50 – $55.20 per hour. Placement depends upon experience, internal equity, and for union positions, collective bargaining agreement.

Description

The Nurse Clinician reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies and regulatory standards. The role works in a multidisciplinary environment requiring exceptional interpersonal skills to establish and maintain relationships with patients, physicians, clinical and administrative units. Responsibilities include patient assessment (via phone or in person), nursing interventions, patient education, and coordination of care.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment
    • Ensure OSHA compliance.
    • Report deficiencies to supervisor immediately.
    • Assist in rectifying deficiencies as requested.
    • Supervise appropriate care of medical equipment.
  • Provide pre‑attending care
    • Perform comprehensive assessment of chief complaint and patient needs using the nursing process.
    • Seek solutions and offer opinions to physicians and other health‑care providers.
    • Document all nursing assessments clearly, completely, and legibly.
    • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
    • Follow protocols for release of patient information.
  • Perform routine nursing duties
    • Independent execution of routine duties (phlebotomy, medication administration, vital signs, specimens).
    • Demonstrate competency in complex specialty procedures (conscious sedation, chemotherapy, inseminations, implantable pain pump adjustments, wound excision).
  • Interpret and act on abnormalities
    • Document interventions.
    • Ensure documentation is clear, complete, and legible.
  • Communicate and collaborate
    • Coordinate appropriate patient care with clinical and administrative departments.
    • Communicate with outside agencies or facilities as required.
  • Triage incoming calls
    • Use clinical assessment skills and service standards.
    • Document assessments appropriately.
  • Manage urgent/emergent situations
    • Operate emergency equipment per protocols.
  • Serve as resource for staff and physicians
    • Maintain alertness to patient care needs.
    • Delegate tasks to Licensed Practical Nurses and Medical Assistants per law and protocols.
  • Comply with policies
    • Recommend and ensure implementation of new policies improving patient experience.
  • Initiate and coordinate patient education
    • Ensure patients understand educational materials.
    • Teach staff formally or informally.
    • Participate in community outreach education and support groups.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Associate's degree in nursing.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school.
  • Registered Professional Nurse licensure in Illinois.
  • Basic CPR certification.
  • Two years of relevant clinical experience in an acute or ambulatory care environment.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (may be required for certain positions).
