Description

The Nurse Clinician will work in a multidisciplinary environment requiring exceptional interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, physicians, clinical and administrative units. This position will utilize nursing skills to perform patient assessments via phone or in person and implement nursing interventions; the ability to use appropriate judgment, independent thinking and creativity when resolving patient care issues is essential.

The clinician will also initiate and organize patient education for the population served by this unit.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment, ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, report deficiencies to supervisor immediately and assist in rectifying them as requested, and assume responsibility for and supervise the appropriate care of medical equipment.
  • Provide pre-attending care for patients, performing a comprehensive assessment of chief complaints and patient needs utilizing the nursing process. Seek solutions and offer opinions to physicians and other healthcare providers. Document all assessments in the patient’s medical record, ensuring clarity, completeness, legibility, and confidentiality.
  • Perform routine nursing duties and demonstrate clinical competency, including phlebotomy, medication administration, vital sign measurement, and preparation of lab specimens. Demonstrate competency in complex specialty-related procedures such as conscious sedation, chemotherapy administration, inseminations, implantable pain pump adjustments, and wound excision and drainage.
  • Interpret and define abnormalities detected in tests and procedures, take appropriate remedial action, and document interventions accurately.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other departments and external agencies to coordinate appropriate patient care.
  • Triage and prioritize incoming telephone calls using clinical assessment skills and service standards, documenting assessments in the medical record.
  • Manage urgent/emergent medical situations in accordance with organizational protocols for emergencies and cardiac arrests, operating emergency equipment as required.
  • Serve as a resource for staff and physicians for daily problem solving and decision making. Delegate appropriate tasks to Licensed Practical Nurses and Medical Assistants in accordance with Illinois law.
  • Comply with all existing policies and procedures related to patient care. Recommend new policies to improve patient experience and ensure timely implementation.
  • Initiate and coordinate patient education, ensuring patients understand materials and can demonstrate understanding when pertinent; provide teaching to staff; participate in community outreach education and specialty-related educational programs.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Nursing
  • Graduate from an accredited nursing school
  • State Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of employment
  • Certification in Basic CPR
  • 2 years of relevant clinical experience in an acute or ambulatory care environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (may be required for certain positions)
