Job DescriptionNorthwestern Medicine invites you to serve as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in our inpatient Cardiac Surgery Step Down Unit. Your role will involve inpatient management and care coordination in a dynamic environment.
Schedule13‑hour shifts (6 a.m. – 7 p.m.), one weekend per month; no nights, holidays, or on‑call duties.
Essential Functions- Demonstrates clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care activities, including diagnosis and management of a wide range of health problems.
- Responsible for the health outcome of an assigned patient population.
- Collaborates with physicians and other health professionals in the area of clinical expertise.
- Develops educational systems for patients, families, and staff.
- Mentors graduate students in advanced practice and patient care.
- Participates in quality improvement and/or research relevant to the area of expertise.
- Conduct comprehensive appraisals of patients' health status through history taking and physical examinations.
- Provide direct clinical care to patients.
- Prescribe and order medications, therapies, laboratory tests, x‑rays, and procedures according to clinical privileges.
- Determine patient need for further health care and refer to appropriate disciplines.
- Educate patients and families and document all care in the medical record.
- Act as a consultant and advocate for patients, families, co‑workers, and the community.
- Maintain certifications, continuing education, and licensure as required.
- Participate in unit/departmental/divisional or hospital committees and task forces.
- Lead teaching strategies for staff and provide formal education to internal and external groups.
- Engage in quality improvement and research initiatives for specific patient populations.
- Master’s degree from an accredited nursing school (APRN) or physician assistant program.
- Acute care certification required for APRNs.
- Current Illinois license as a Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (or Physician Assistant).
- Certification as an APRN by a national certifying body approved by the Illinois Department of Regulation APRN Board.
- Privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO).
- Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation – BLS issued by the American Heart Association.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as an APP in cardiac surgery ICUs and/or step‑down units.
