ADA Accommodation Specialist

PRIMARY PURPOSE

To enhance the ADA process for claimants requesting accommodations under the ADAAA; to review complex medical information for temporary and permanent accommodation requests; and to approve and/or negotiate restrictions as required under the ADAAA, state and/or client requirements.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Review medical information for ADAAA temporary and permanent accommodation requests.
  • Approve and/or negotiate accommodations as written; renegotiate reasonable alternative accommodations, or deny restrictions based on lack of supporting documentation through correspondence with physician, colleague, department and other key stakeholders.
  • Maintain regular contact with colleagues, supervisors, health care providers, and other key stakeholders regarding progress and status of accommodations; assist in the resolution of any challenges related to the accommodations.
  • Conduct interactive discussions with claimants and employers, assist in answering/resolving any follow-up questions/issues and help identify clarifications, when needed, from health care providers.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and resource to supervisors, colleagues, union, or physicians regarding accommodation/work restriction issues and processes. Provide advice and counsel as appropriate and act as a liaison between all parties when necessary.
  • Ascertain the specific physical tolerances and vocational skills needed for particular employment positions; make decisions or assist case management staff in making decisions regarding a client's competence in performing a particular position.
  • Adhere to all medical and legal regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Review the essential job functions provided by the employer along with restrictions/limitations provided by the claimant and their treating provider to confirm the claimant can meet the essential functions with or without the accommodation(s) requested.
  • Contact employers to obtain specific information regarding an area of employment, i.e., training or education needed, physical demands, wages and benefits, and availability.
  • Thoroughly review contested claims.
  • Assist as needed with submission of accommodation recommendations to employers for consideration.
  • Work closely with other members of team to: a) ensure smooth transition from medical case management into job placement; and/or b) discuss the progress on each case suggesting changes in rehabilitation plans.
  • Document contacts in claim notes; prepare reports and/or forms documenting the results of research/negotiations performed; and track disposition decisions.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Supports the organization's quality program(s).
QUALIFICATIONS Education & Licensing

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing, social work or vocational rehabilitation is preferred. At least one of the following licenses or certifications is required: RN or CRC.

Experience

Four (4) years of related experience or equivalent combination of experience and education required. Medical disability or vocational rehabilitation experience preferred.
