Position Summary

The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes the initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence‑Based Practice, Relationship‑Based Care, and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. The role engages patients and families, develops educational plans, responds to changing needs, collaborates with the health care team, and supports departmental goals.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develops, implements, and updates the patient’s plan of care based on ongoing assessment and input from the patient’s family.
  • Shares information and collaborates with health‑care team members to promote effective patient care.
  • Verifies and implements orders from physicians, physician assistants, and/or advanced practice nurses, performing interventions as prescribed and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to develop an appropriate educational plan.
  • Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to patient’s changing needs.
  • Engages support personnel by delegating tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides support and feedback.
  • Advocates for patients, families, the community, and the nursing profession.
  • Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence‑based research, current standards of practice, and clinical experience to provide quality patient care measured by established nursing standards and accrediting bodies.
  • Assumes role of Charge Nurse when assigned, utilizing appropriate resources and tools.
  • Collaborates with other nurses to identify, promote, and provide positive learning experiences for staff and students.
  • Serves as preceptor and/or resource to nursing and support staff and students.
  • Takes responsibility for professional growth by identifying learning needs and initiating strategies to meet them.
  • Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Enabled to obtain licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
  • Current BLS/CPR and/or other required unit‑specific certifications.
  • Current advanced cardiac life support, or within six months of hire for the main hospital.
  • Effective communication skills (oral and written) facilitating therapeutic relationships.
  • Intermediate computer skills with ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) on the job.
  • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history required.
