Job Description
Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system at UChicago Medicine as a Special Procedures Nurse (RN) supporting our Neurosciences Infusion Services at the DCAM clinic. In this highly specialized role, you will work alongside a multidisciplinary team of nationally recognized neurological experts caring for patients with some of the most complex neurologic conditions
Under the direction of an Attending Physician or a licensed independent practitioner, the Special Procedures Nurse RN provides technically complex and high risk nursing care services to patients which may include one or more of the following categories: sedation, intravenous infusions, complex procedures, e.g., lumbar puncture, cardiac catherization;
This may also include specialized monitoring during procedure and recovery phase;
The RN may have Charge Nurse responsibility for his/her assigned unit.

- Handles confidential information consistent with Federal HIPAA legislation.
- Performs a variety of clinical and research procedures with efficiency and high standards of quality; assures that the proper protocol is used for each sedation.
- Provides patient care in a compassionate and empathetic manner; demonstrates knowledge of age-specific considerations in the provision of care. Involves a multidisciplinary team as needed to support patient and family psychological, social and spiritual needs.
- Accurately completes required patient assessment, documentation, and interpretations for each patient encounter. Possesses sound professional judgment for timely physician intervention as needed. Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate actions, initiates appropriate life supporting interventions while communicating appropriately with physicians.
- Maintains nursing equipment and work areas in proper working condition; reports malfunctioning equipment or housekeeping issues to the appropriate person. Maintains a neat and clean work area with equipment. Maintains adequate inventory control of all necessary supplies. Emergency equipment maintained with adequate availability, good working order and restocks as needed with a fiscal awareness and accountability.
- Interfaces with customers, specifically patients, families, visitors, and UCMC staff in a professional, positive and accommodating manner; demonstrates knowledge of AIDET principles and employs in all situations; demonstrates flexibility in accommodating special needs of customers whenever possible.
- Performs all required Quality Assurance testing as indicated or as required by UCMC
- Rotates to clinical areas as directed to assist in safe staffing ratios; utilizes resources to safely transport sedated patients to an appropriate or designated area within the UCMC
Qualifications
- RN Required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred; experience may be considered in lieu of degree in addition to 5+ years clinical experience
