Postdoctoral Appointee – MSD Thin Films, Surface Science, Electronic Materials
The Materials Science Division (MSD) of Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for a postdoctoral appointment in atomic layer deposition and related areas. The role focuses on the development of semiconductor materials, thin‑film deposition, in‑situ metrology, interface science, and autonomous materials discovery. The candidate will be supervised by Ashley Bielinski and Alex Martinson.
Responsibilities- Design and execute experiments for atomic layer deposition of ultra‑wide bandgap semiconductor thin films.
- Develop and implement in‑situ characterization techniques (e.g., ellipsometry, quartz crystal microgravimetry, X‑ray photoelectron spectroscopy) to monitor film growth and interface quality.
- Utilize autonomous processing workflows to accelerate materials discovery.
- Investigate chemical selectivity at interfaces to repair electronic defects.
- Publish results in peer‑reviewed journals and present at conferences.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams and model Argonne core values.
- PhD in materials science, physics, chemistry, electrical engineering, or a related field earned within the last 5 years.
- Strong track record of problem solving and scientific publications.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with researchers from diverse technical backgrounds.
- On‑site presence at Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois.
- Experience in atomic layer deposition (ALD) and semiconductor materials.
- Hands‑on experience maintaining and modifying vacuum deposition equipment.
- Experience developing and/or performing in‑situ characterization.
- Familiarity with advanced thin‑film characterization techniques (ellipsometry, quartz crystal microgravimetry, X‑ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electronic transport).
Pay Range: $70,758.00–$ (subject to qualifications and experience)
Comprehensive benefits are part of the total rewards package.
