Research Technician

Department: BSD CCC - Cancer Research Lab

About the Department: The University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCCCC) is an integral part of the Biological Sciences Division. It supports research, training, education, and clinical trials, among other activities.

Job Summary: As a lab technician in our gynecologic cancer lab, you will perform cell culture, genomics, metabolomics, and molecular biology work using animal models, cancer cell lines, and human specimens. You will support research projects, analyze data, generate reports, and manage equipment and inventory in a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical and administrative support in the laboratory, performing basic laboratory techniques and analysis under direction.
  • Acquire and maintain competency in routine techniques including Western blotting, qPCR, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence.
  • Assist with laboratory operations, including ordering and maintaining equipment and supplies.
  • Collect and enter data; assist in analyzing data and preparing reports, manuscripts, and other documents.
  • Comply with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives, and mandates.
  • Assist with the installation, set‑up, and performance of experiments; interact with students and other laboratory staff under the direction of the principal investigator.
  • Assist with recruiting and scheduling research subjects, developing study protocols, creating data collection tools, building databases, and providing general administrative support.
  • Perform other related work as needed.
Qualifications
  • Education: Vocational training, apprenticeships, or equivalent experience in a related field. A Bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, biology or related field is preferred.
  • Experience: 2–5 years of work experience in a related discipline; prior laboratory experience; at least two years performing cell cultures; mouse handling, tissue harvest, and analysis.
  • Technical

    Skills:

    Proficiency in Western blotting, qPCR, immunofluorescence, and molecular biology assays; strong data management skills; knowledge of Microsoft Office; understanding of complex documents such as clinical trials.
  • Preferred

    Competencies:

    Excellent communication, organization, interpersonal skills; adaptability; ability to handle competing demands with diplomacy.
