Position Summary

We are seeking a PLM Asbestos Analyst with a minimum of three (3) years of hands‑on experience performing Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) asbestos analysis in an accredited environmental laboratory. This role requires the ability to work independently, maintain strict adherence to regulatory and quality requirements, and consistently produce accurate, defensible analytical results.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform independent PLM asbestos analysis in accordance with EPA 600/R-93/116 and applicable Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) requirements
  • Prepare and analyze asbestos samples using appropriate PLM techniques
  • Accurately identify regulated asbestos fiber types (chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, actinolite, anthophyllite)
  • Estimate asbestos content percentages and document findings clearly and accurately
  • Complete all analytical worksheets, logs, and documentation in compliance with laboratory SOPs and QA/QC requirements
  • Enter and verify analytical data in LIMS or approved laboratory systems
  • Perform and document required quality control checks, including duplicates and analyst verification
  • Maintain proper chain-of-custody and sample traceability
  • Follow all laboratory safety procedures
    , including proper asbestos handling and disposal
  • Identify and promptly elevate analytical or quality issues to laboratory management
  • Maintain PLM microscopes, accessories, and work areas in proper working condition
  • Support laboratory audits, inspections, proficiency testing, and refresher training requirements
  • Collaborate with project managers, administrative staff, and laboratory leadership to meet turnaround times and client commitments
Required Experience
  • Minimum 3 years of hands‑on PLM asbestos analysis experience in an accredited environmental laboratory
  • Proven ability to perform PLM analysis independently without supervision
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation accuracy, and time management
Required Certifications (Must‑Have)
  • Current Annual Refresher Training
    , as required by EPA and State of Illinois regulations
Preferred (Not Required)
  • Experience in AIHA or NVLAP‑accredited laboratories
  • Participation in proficiency testing programs
  • Experience working with LIMS systems
Compensation

Salary Range: $70,000 – $85,000 annually
