Safety/Environmental Compliance Specialist – Chemistry

The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) is a leading public research university serving over 34,000 students. The Chemistry Department seeks a Safety/Environmental Compliance Specialist to develop and coordinate environmental and occupational safety programs, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Develop safety and health policies, draft codes and work procedures, and coordinate programs with other departments.
  • Maintain liaison with city, state, and federal agencies to ensure compliance with safety and health codes, standards, and regulations; advise the department on safety aspects of instructional materials and equipment.
  • Supervise the formulation, implementation, and compliance oversight of Chemistry’s chemical, biological, radiological, and industrial safety programs; review related records such as training and incident logs.
  • Act as liaison with internal and external safety and facilities personnel to ensure all Chemistry facilities and work procedures meet applicable safety, building, and construction codes and Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) guidelines.
  • Inspect and remediate deficiencies in building services; work with facilities management and trades to develop repair, remodeling, and construction documents.
  • Prepare and present lectures on laboratory safety to graduate students and new research staff; consult with faculty and serve on the Chemistry Department Safety Committee.
  • Oversee computerized database management of all physical plant work orders, purchase orders, room usage and assignment reports, and related documentation.
  • Interview, train, supervise, mentor, and evaluate student employees and extra help staff involved in safety programs.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, environmental engineering, environmental health, safety engineering, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field.
  • One year (12 months) of professional work experience in a safety or compliance related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or experience in Chemistry.
