Job DescriptionBe a part of a world‑class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as a Public Safety Officer at our Hyde Park location. This position is 100% onsite and requires a resident of Greater Chicagoland. Under the general supervision of the Public Safety Supervisor, you will help maintain a secure and safe environment for faculty, staff, patients, visitors, and property. Duties include handling communications for the Public Safety Department, rotating and receiving all emergency and non‑emergency calls to the dispatch center, gathering descriptive information to determine the nature, urgency, location, and scope of incidents.
EssentialJob Functions
- Serve as a mentor and provide support to Public Safety Coordinators.
- Supervise shift operations.
- Conduct foot patrols in assigned areas, double‑tap required tour access points, and report identified safety and security risks/issues.
- Conduct mobile patrols on grounds and parking garages as assigned.
- Verify areas are properly locked and secured when performing patrols.
- Provide immediate response to unplanned life‑safety or security‑related emergencies and drills/exercises.
- Request emergency services and/or UCPD assistance when necessary.
- Manage two‑way communications and resources during daily operations and emergency response.
- Provide security escort services when requested.
- Provide immediate response to difficult or abusive patients and visitors as requested by staff. Assist clinical staff in restraining patients when necessary.
- Provide security in high‑risk areas.
- Perform dispatch communications and monitor CCTV.
- Maintain accurate records of request for service and other departmental activities.
- Assign Incident Report numbers and complete accurate, detailed reports for security‑related incidents.
- Assist with investigations of criminal and/or suspicious occurrences in the medical center.
- Communicate necessary information to other shifts, department administration, leadership, and UPCD in a timely manner.
- Direct and coordinate response to service calls and alarms.
- Attend court or other legal proceedings to provide details of specific incidents as required.
- Perform other duties assigned.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Completion of the following training or certifications provided by UCM within the first 180 days of employment:
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Verbal Intervention Training/Certification
- International Association of Health Safety and Security (IAHSS) Advanced Certification
- CPR/AED Certification
- Defensive Tactics
- Handcuffing Certification
- Use of Restraints
- Associate degree in Criminal Justice or equivalent field preferred.
- At least one year in health care.
