ED Podium – Public Safety Officer – Swedish Hospital
Hourly Pay Range
$18.84 - $27.32 - The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.

- Location:
Swedish Hospital - Part Time – 24 hrs

Rotating Shifts - Days:
Sunday (4 p.m. – 12:30 a.m.), Thursday & Friday (8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, provides unarmed uniformed security/safety related services. The services performed support the department’s mission to provide high quality service and to protect persons and property from harm. May also perform duties of bicycle patrol officer.
What You Will Do- Patrol assigned areas of facilities and grounds on foot or in motorized vehicle according to established schedule and investigate unusual occurrences.
- Report incidents or potential loss of Hospital, employee, patient or visitor property through fire, theft, or vandalism and, if necessary, involve police and provide assistance during police investigation.
- Respond to all service calls in a timely, safe, professional, and courteous manner.
- Welcome customers to the Hospital, provide accurate directions to patients and visitors, and, whenever possible, escort individuals to their destination.
- Direct vehicle traffic in and around hospital facilities to prevent congestion. Ensure loading docks and ambulance unloading zones are cleared of unauthorized vehicles at all times. Issue parking citations to improperly parked vehicles and maintain a record of citations.
- Physically restrain unruly patients and/or visitors and individuals posing a threat to themselves, visitors, hospital employees and/or property, and, if necessary, involve police in removing visitors and provide assistance including court testimony.
- Administer appropriate control systems to protect patient and employee valuables and hospital equipment and supplies, and monitor handling of lost and found items.
- Check that hospital doors and windows are securely locked, inspect equipment, alarms, fire extinguishers, and other equipment to ensure they are properly working, and notify appropriate personnel of problems as necessary.
- Investigate and document thefts, accidents and other incidents to obtain related evidence necessary to determine involved parties. Prepare documentation carefully to ensure neatness, accuracy, and completeness.
Education and/or Experience
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum of one year experience in a customer-focused service-based organization
- Knowledge base developed through a minimum of two years of experience in law enforcement, military or private security
- Experience in a healthcare environment
- Fundamental understanding of computers, loss prevention and fire/security technology
- Valid Illinois Firearm Owner’s Identification Card required within 90 days of start date
- Current CPR certification issued by either American Heart Association or Red Cross required within 90 days of start date
- A valid driver’s license is required; if personal vehicle is used, automobile liability coverage must be maintained as required by law and evidence of such coverage may be requested
- CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) certification required within six months of hire
- Attainment of certification by the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) for their Basic Healthcare Security Officer training course within twelve months of start date
